What does God expect of me?
Give God praise for our victories.
Judges 5:1-11
Victories are hard to come by. Whether it's the last ten pounds you've been trying to lose, a long-anticipated promotion, or winning the war against addiction, victories are hard earned. You want to stand up and shout, "I did it!" And sometimes you should.
Deborah's song does not minimize her role in victorious battle. She sang, "Village life ceased, it ceased in Israel, until I, Deborah, arose, arose a mother in Israel" (5:7). But she also acknowledged that the Lord was their leader: "When leaders lead in Israel, when people willingly offer themselves, bless the LORD." (5:2).
Remember that victories are not yours alone. A Christian fights his battles with the strength of his Lord. And when the Christian wins, it's only fair (and worshipful) to give praise where it belongsto God. You can do that with a simply phrase, such as "God helped me." You can pour your creative talent (as Deborah did) into a song, essay, or art piece of praise. Or you can whisper a simple thanks to God, who has given you the victory. (See also Exodus 20:1-17; Jeremiah 1:4-19; Micah 6:6-8; Romans 8:1-17.)
Good Words to Remember:
Among the watering places, there they shall recount the righteous acts of the LORD, the righteous acts of his villagers in Israel. Judges 5:11
