What does God expect of me?
Be truly devoted, not outwardly religious.
Micah 6:6-8

If a little is good, more must be better, reasoned the prophet Micah, tongue-in-cheek. If God wanted sacrifices, let's give him more and bigger ones. Lots of calves. Thousands of sheep. Rivers of oil. Why, they could even give him their firstborn children to show that they really love him!

But as Micah knew, none of this outward giving really shows what's inside. Anyone can go to church or tithe large portions of their income to God. But that person could have absolutely no care for God.

People might be impressed at such dramatic displays, but God isn't. The three actions that show true devotion to God are justice, mercy, and humble obedience. These aren't easy actions, but they can change the course of history. What would happen if every person chose to be fair and honest? What would happen in marriages and families if every person mercifully forgave while expecting excellence? Who would doubt God's existence if believers quietly did right in God's name? Conversely, what damage is done when believers cheat, hold grudges, and insist on a showy display of religiosity?

God expects three things of you: to see that justice is done; to let mercy be your first concern; and to humbly obey your God. (See also Exodus 20:1-17; Judges 5:1-11; Jeremiah 1:4-19; Romans 8:1-17.)

Good Words to Remember:
He has shown you, O man, what is good ; and what does the LORD require of you but to do justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God? Micah 6:8

Today's Challenge:
Do you meet God's three expectations? Why, or why not?
