What should I look for in a future spouse?
Look for a person who treasures you.
Song of Solomon 1
Perhaps you're dating someone who values you. But why does she think you're valuable? Where does she think your worth comes from? Is it because you're a person God created, with your own unique history and abilities? Or is it because you laugh at her jokes and make an attractive addition to her when she goes out in public? While it's fine to laugh at her jokes and be attractive, things like that shouldn't be the main reason she holds you in high regard.
A partner to live with for a lifetime should be someone who values you because you're a unique creation of God. He should remember God created you for other purposes besides what you can do for him—although you'll do much for him. And he should think you're worthwhile not only because you add to his life, but simply because you exist.
In this opening passage of Song of Solomon, the woman apologized for flaws in her physical beauty. Her lover not only overlooked her flaws, but lavished intense praise on her. She was valuable not for how she looked but for who she was.
