If you're single, chances are you've felt—or may currently be feeling—pressure from friends and family to marry. They might tell you the pressure is "for your own good." Or that you would be happier, more fulfilled, and a better servant of God if you had a spouse.

Miriam, the sister of Moses and Aaron, shows that a single person can act not only as God's servant, but as His minister. After God saved the Israelites from the Egyptian army that was chasing them, Miriam let them in inspired praise of God.

Miriam is spoken of as a prophet, which means she had a special gift for using words in God's service. As a servant of God, she praised Him for his greatness. As a worship leader, she led the Israelites in singing and dancing before God's presence. Miriam also served as a role model for all the other women who followed her in praise.

Miriam used her prophetic gift as a single personal, especially in a culture where single women were expected (and often required) to marry. Like Miriam, you can discover and use your gifts in God's service—and lead others to do the same. (See also Judges 6:7; 2 Samuel 20:14-22; Malachi 3:16-18.)
