How can I tell the difference between good ambition and self-centeredness?
Use Scripture as a check.
Mark 8:34-38
Are you considering switching jobs? Asking your current supervisor for more pay? Are you wishing you had a roommate who cared more about the cleanliness of your apartment, like you do? Do you wonder why it seems that you always get passed over on that church committee?
God has some wisdom for any decision you may need to makeor any thoughts or emotions that are stirring around in your head. In fact, this passage says that if you read and study his Word, God will help you discover "the thoughts and intents of the heart" (4:12). Nothing is hidden from Godyour good days, your bad days; your happy thoughts, your jealous or angry thoughts. You can fool some people, and you can sometimes rationalize and convince yourself that you're doing the right thing. But you can never fool God. As the Scripture here says, "There is no creature hidden from his sight, but all things are naked and open to the eyes of him to whom we must give account (4:13). What a reliefand a privilegethat our great God knows us so well and loves us anyway! (See also Genesis 11:1-9; Mark 8:34-38.)
Good Words to Remember:
For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. Hebrews 4:12
Today's Challenge:
