How can I prevent financial issues from becoming stumbling blocks in my marriage?
Don't focus too much on finances.
1 Timothy 6:6-10 | posted 1/30/2009

Money problems are a leading cause of divorce, so it's not enough to say, "Don't pay attention to money." Married couples have to pay attention to money. They have to learn to plan its use together, to talk about their differences, and learn to recover from financial emergencies.

But don't spend too much time on money. It's simply not worth it. In his letter, Paul said, "We brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out. And having food and clothing, with these we shall be content" (6:7, 8). One way to keep money from hurting your marriage is to keep money in its proper place. Learn to use it wisely, but know that money itself will never bring you contentment. That comes from God alone.

Learn to enjoy together what God gives you—whether it's a sunset or the comfort of an old sweater. (See also Psalm 49:16-20; Malachi 3:8-12; Matthew 6:19-24; Hebrews 13:5, 6.)

Good Words to Remember:

Godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out. And having food and clothing, with these we shall be content. 1 Timothy 6:6-8

Today's Challenge:

Remember that most of what is truly important can never be bought with cash.
