How can I tell if I'm doing a good job as a mother?

"Son, why have you done this to us? Look, Your father and I have sought You anxiously" (2:48).

What mother hasn't echoed those words of Mary's? Sometimes your children baffle you, dismay you, or even exasperate you. You wonder about the best possible way to handle emotional swings, academic challenges, developmental issues, and discipline. You want so badly to rear children who will love God and serve their neighbors. But frankly, you often feel inadequate to the task.

Imagine how Mary must have felt, knowing she was charged with rearing God's Son! When she accepted the task, she may have thought that perhaps God would give her some detailed instructions. But, like us, she had to get by with on-the-job training.

But no matter how much in the dark you may feel about what's best for your children, God knows. Nothing about your children is hidden from Him. Even before they were born, God had written their days in his book (Psalm 139:15, 16).

With the heavenly Father involved in your parenting, you can relax and be assured He'll use your faithful efforts to do what's best for your children. (See also Ephesians 6:1-4; Hebrews 12:5-13.)
