When a poor decision on my part has damaged my reputation as a Christian, what can I do?
Realize God can use even your failures for his good purposes.
Galatians 1:11-24
Few of us have past failures that are as devastating as the apostle Paul's. In his zeal as a devout Jew he'd been cruel to the church of God and even tried to destroy it (1:13). Luke, in writing the Book of Acts, was unflinching in describing the trouble that Paul (then called Saul) caused as he went from house to house arresting Christ's followers, and having them thrown into jail (Acts 7:57-8:2).
These were painful memories for Paul, and he must have wondered how God could ever use him. But Paul found that God really can redeem even our worst mistakes. He points out in Galatians 1:25 that his conversion from a persecutor of Christ's followers to a Christ follower himself was a powerful testimony to others. It was upon hearing of Paul's transformation that the people in Judea in particular began to praise God.
Paul reveals it's best to be honest about your mistakes. Such honesty expresses appropriate humilityand also allows God's strength and power to shine in your life. (See also Joel 2:12-17; Jonah 2; 3; Micah 7:18, 19; Zechariah 10:6-12; Luke 7:36-50.)
Good Words to Remember:
They were hearing only, "He who formerly persecuted us now preaches the faith which he once tried to destroy." And they glorified God in me. Galatians 1:23, 24
Today's Challenge:
How has God already used your failures for his purposes?
