Entertaining Faith
Mainstream music, movies and TV can give us a chance to share our faith. How? Read on for examples from The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, The Polar Express, and White Stripes.
by Scott La Counte and Todd Hertz
The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe
Recommend the seven-book Narnia series by Christian writer C.S. Lewis to your friends.
Think about how Aslan is like Jesus. What qualities do they both share? Talk to friends about these comparisons and how Aslan's sacrifice is like Jesus'.
Compare how each of the four main characters reacts to and eventually believes in Aslan. For instance, how is Lucy's path to believing in Aslan different than Edmund's? Which of the four kids do you identify with most? Why? Ask friends these questions and see what they say.
Read Aslan's Call or Finding God in the Land of Narnia (both available at Christianbook.com). These books look closely at what writer C.S. Lewis was saying about God and faith through his novels. These books will help you see more faith connections and share what you learn with friends.
The Polar Express
Read Mark 10:15-16. Think about what it means to have the faith of a child. Why is that a good thing? When watching The Polar Express with friends, ask them why they think it's easier for children to hear Santa's bell.
Think about how the boy's belief in Santa grows. Before he actually meets Santa, his faith grows by seeing many signs of Santa's work. It's like believing in the wind: We can't see it, but we know it's there because we see and feel its effects. Faith in God is like this (John 20:29 and Hebrews 11:6). Think about how you could explain this truth to friends.
Decide what your golden ticket would say if you were on that train. What do you need to learn? What gifts do you have that God could use? Ask your friends these same questions.
White Stripes
Think about "Blue Orchid's" lyrics: "We all need to do something [to] keep the truth from showing up." The song claims we put on masks so others won't see who we really are. What masks do you wear so others will accept you? Pray that God would help you show your true self to your friends.
Think about what the Bible says about the newest album's major themes: loneliness, acceptance and relationships. Read 2 Timothy 4:16-17, Galatians 6:2, Ecclesiastes 4:9-10, 1 Corinthians 1:10, John 13:34 and 1 Peter 1:22. If you have a friend who's down or feeling unaccepted, try to live out these verses to him or her. Look for opportunities to share what God says about how we should treat one another.
