Entertaining Faith
Making sense of the messages in mainstream music, movies and more.
by Todd Hertz and Chris Lutes
Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby
Ricky Bobby often prays to "baby Jesus." Other characters discuss how they view Jesus. How do you view Jesusboth in appearance and personality? Why? What false impressions of Christ do you think people commonly have?
Ricky Bobby's arch-nemesis is gay. In the end, they share a big kiss. What do you think the film was saying about homosexuality? Do you think the movie was making fun of homosexuals, people who disagree with homosexuality, or both? The Bible says homosexuality is a sin (Romans 1:18-32, 1 Corinthians 6:9-11 and 1 Timothy 1:9-11), but how do you think Christians should treat homosexuals? (Check out the IYF article "How Do I Treat Gay Friends?")
Thrice
Thrice's "Image of the Invisible" says, "We're more than carbon and chemicals. We are the image of the invisible." How are you the image of the invisible? How are we more than carbon and chemicals? (See Genesis 1:26, Ephesians 3:16-18, 2 Corinthians 5:17 and 1 Corinthians 6:19.)
"Stand and Feel Your Worth" ends with, "Awed by grace, I fall on my face. And scream the word that can save us all." What do you think that word is?
The song "Like Moths to Flame" is written in the perspective of Peter: "I will follow you, lay down my life. You surprised me when you said I'd fall away." Read Mark 14:27-31 and 66-72. Write a journal entry in the voice of Peter. What do you think he would have been feeling? How can you relate?
Maximum Ride
In James Patterson's first Maximum Ride novel (The Angel Experiment), the anything-but-religious main characters hide in a New York City cathedral (chapters 97 and 98). They feel comforted and even pray. During times of trouble, why do you think people often turn to religion and prayer?
In what ways could "the flock" be compared to any good, caring family? How do they stick together even when they're mad at each other?
Think about the "the Voice" Max hears. Why does she sometimes ignore it? How can she know if the Voice is her friend or enemy? Compare the Voice to any time you've felt God speaking to you. How can you know it's really God? (See Psalm 119:105, Proverbs 12:15, 1 John 4:1-3.)
What characteristics set Max apart from the whitecoats and Headmaster Pruitt? What characteristics should define a Christian's life? How should they be evident? (See Galatians 5:22, 1 Corinthians 13:1-13, 1 John 3:16-18.)
