Ugly Betty's World

Q. What do you think of Ugly Betty?
A. The show's certainly received a lot of buzz because of it's positive message about a normal-looking, fashion-misguided, Latina heroine surrounded by the gorgeous and rich employees of a New York fashion magazine. Actress America Ferrera, who's not ugly at all, has become a representative of "real" women everywhere who are beautiful—but don't measure up to the impossible standards of the fashion world.
In fact, IYF readers awarded Betty second place in IYF's redeeming TV characters contest. (See the June/July '07 issue.) Her character is all about being herself, inner beauty and not giving in to pressure. That's great.
I too applaud this character. But while Betty herself works hard to do what's right, she does live in a world that can come with a good deal of immorality. There are often scantily dressed models, a lot of sexual encounters and sexual dialogue.
It's great to see that Betty's own personal values often rise above the show's very seedy, messed-up world. And it is certainly worth thinking about how Christians should relate to such a world. But Betty is the lone redeeming element in a show of questionable content. If the sex-saturated episodes take your mind places it should not go, we encourage you to change the channel.
