I Saw the Invisible
An "interview" with a mystery biblical character who really knows God is all around us.
By Todd Hertz

One hard-to-grasp thing about the Bible is the idea that there are actually two worlds: the world we see, and a supernatural world we can't see. To try and make sense of this whole supernatural thing, we interviewed a biblical character who actually saw the unseen—and lived to tell about it.

So, you saw the supernatural?

I did. It was cool. I now know for a fact that the trees, circus chimps and plywood we see around us are not all there is to this world. There's an entire unseen spiritual world all around us: demons, angels and big battles between them. We aren't alone.

Do you have super x-ray vision?

Ummm, no.

A special pair of infared goggles?

Nope.

Were you exposed to radiation or a mutant spider bite?

Not that I know of.

Then how did you get this ability?

It all started with a war between Israel and a king named Aram. Aram's strategy was to sneak attack Israel in random places. But it never worked because of a prophet named Elisha. I knew this prophet pretty well because I was his servant. Anyway, God would tell him where Aram was about to attack, so Elisha could warn Israel's king. Of course, King Aram didn't like this one bit. And so, he ordered his army to track down Elisha.

When are we gonna get to the exciting "seeing angels" part?

Soon. So, Aram's mighty army swooped in to snag Elisha in the middle of the night. I saw all these soldiers storming the city. I freaked out. I ran into Elisha's room—still in my Spider-Man PJs—and yelled, "My master! What can we do?"

Elisha was all calm. He's like, "Don't be afraid. Those who are with us are more than those who are with them."

"Those who are with us?" What's that mean?

Since I knew Elisha loved God, I figured he meant that we have God on our side and he's greater than this army. But seriously, that didn't comfort me all that much. I didn't see how God up in heaven was gonna help us out of this. We needed a S.W.A.T. team or, at least, Jack Bauer.

How'd Elisha react to your doubt?

He prayed, "Lord, open my servant's eyes so he can see." It was as if a curtain was pulled back on the world.

I saw protective horses and chariots of fire surrounding the town. We were being protected by the unseen spiritual forces of God!

So, was there a massive war between the armies?

No. Instead, the Lord made Aram's men blind. Then, Elisha said to them, "Hey, you're in the wrong place. Follow me!" He led them out of town and into a stronghold of the Israel army! When they all opened their eyes, they were sitting right in the middle of all Israel's troops! We were safe!

Wow. That's incredible.

Yep. And it was all because of God's unseen but constant presence and power.

Are God's spiritual forces surrounding us right now?

I can't see them anymore. But I really believe they are.

Oh, did you lose your special goggles?

I told you. I never had any goggles!

Who is this mystery Bible character? Find out in 2 Kings 6:8-22.
