Entertaining Faith
Making sense of the messagesin mainstream music, movies and more.
by Todd Hertz
Ratatouille
- Remy finds his life's passion and wants to do it to with excellence. What's a passion you have? How do you (or could you) use that for God? How do you pray about your passion? What sounds worse to you: 1) To pursue your passion half-heartedly, or 2) Not to pursue your passion at all? How would Remy answer? What would Skinner say? To discover how Jesus might answer, see Luke 19:12-26.
- Gusteau's key phrase is "Everyone can cook." What does he mean by that? How do you think that translates to the biblical idea of spiritual gifts? (See Romans 12:4-7, 1 Corinthians 12 or Ephesians 4:11-13.) Can someone not given these gifts do them? How do you know what your spiritual gift is?
- When is criticism a good thing? When is it a bad thing? What's the difference between being a good critic and being a snob? Should Christians be critics?
The Daily Show
- Look up satire in the dictionary. What does it mean to you? How can it be a positive thing? How can it be negative? What's the difference between satirizing something and making fun of people?
- Think about The Daily Show's satiric take on culture, politics and news. Is it usually insightful and fair or mean and humiliating?
- How do you think the show treats God? How does it treat Christians? Have you seen Daily Show satires of God or believers that made you uncomfortable? On the other hand, have you seen satires you thought were accurate?
I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry
- Write a sentence summarizing the main idea you think the filmmakers wanted to express about homosexuality. Then, write a sentence explaining God's view of homosexuality. Compare the two ideas. (For help, read Romans 1:18-32 and 1 Corinthians 6:9-11.)
- The fire chief says sexual orientation doesn't make someone a bad person. Do you agree? How do you view homosexuals? How does their sin compare to any other sin (envy, lust, theft, etc.)? See 1 Timothy 1:9-10. How do you think Christians should treat homosexuals?
- How does this movie's portrayal of Christians make you feel? Is it a fair portrayal? Why are they shown this way? Do you know Christians like this?
- Read John 4:5-30. Draw two columns on a piece of paper. In the first, write words that describe Jesus' approach to this sinful woman. In the other, write adjectives that describe the Christians in Chuck and Larry. Compare your lists. Following Jesus' model, how can Christians best treat people who don't acknowledge their sin?
