Different Journeys, Same Destination
Shane & Shane share their stories of faith.
by Todd Hertz

The inspiration for Shane & Shane's latest CD, Pages, came from journal pages chronicling their own experiences living day-to-day with Christ. Here, they tell their stories of how they each began their walks with God:

Different Journeys, Same Destination

Shane Barnard: One night in ninth grade, my buddy Zack and I were looking up at the west Texas stars and talking about how there had to be more to life than football and girls. Neither one of us was saved. After that conversation though, Zack and I started going to his mom's church on Wednesday nights. There, I saw true biblical fellowship and community. I also realized my sin. Soon, Zack and I came to the Lord together.

The funny thing: Before that night of looking up at the stars, I hadn't been asking questions. I didn't know I was missing anything. I wasn't hurting. Things were awesome. It's a strong testimony to God's power that he can reveal himself whenever and still draw you to him. You don't have to be looking or in pain. I mean, no matter how good life seems, who's gonna turn down a filet mignon when they have a bologna sandwich?

Shane Everett: As a teen, I sometimes went to church and youth group, but the gospel never made sense. I never understood who Jesus was. I probably would have said I was a Christian, but faith wasn't my priority. Instead, high school for me was all about impressing people—whether chasing girls, playing sports or trying to be popular. I feared not being cool. Everything I did was about saying, "Man, look what I did. I'm so awesome."

In college, I was getting the attention I craved by being in a band. One night, I was in a closed bar after a show when the lights came on. I'll tell you, a bar at the end of a busy night is nasty. It sounds corny, but I thought, Man, this is like the condition of my heart. It's just a mess.

That moment got me thinking. I realized I was miserable. I'd been reaching for fleeting pleasures—and was left empty. In my spirit, I felt this voice say, "Son, it's time to come home." I didn't know what to do, but I knew the answer was Jesus.

For the first year, being a Christian seemed simple: no smoking, no cussing, no drinking, no sex. I was like, "I'm doing good!" Until I read through the entire Bible. That's when I realized real faith wasn't about not doing bad stuff. Instead, not doing those things should be a reflection of a changed heart longing to live for the Lord. The Bible showed me what Christ really wanted from his followers.
