Entertaining Faith
Making sense of the messages in Beowulf, Halo 3, and Girls Rock!
by Todd Hertz

Beowulf
  • ChristianityTodayMovies.com wrote: "The film reveals that the temptations we give into, however small, harmless or pleasurable they may seem, often return when we least expect them." What does this mean to you? How does sin affect characters' lives and relationships? Numbers 14:18 is quoted in Beowulf. What does it have to do with the story?

  • The movie is rated PG-13 even though it has nudity and gory violence. Do you think being animated makes these portrayals any less harmful or dangerous? Why or why not?

  • Read 1 Peter 5:8 and James 1:14-15. What do these verses say about temptation? How do these ideas pop up in Beowulf? (Think about the scenes with Grendel's mom.) What precautions can help in resisting temptation?

  • What decision do you think Beowulf's friend Wiglaf makes when the movie ends and why?

Halo 3

  • The Covenant's attack on human-kind is basically a holy war; they declare humanity is an "affront to the gods." How might this be a subtle commentary on Christianity? Or on religious violence? Read Romans 12:14-21, Matthew 5:9, 38-48 and Proverbs 25:21-22. What do these verses say about how Christians should treat enemies?

  • A Halo 3 designer told Entertainment Weekly: "We do a lot of testing to make sure … [Halo] is easy to play and, hopefully, easy to get addicted to." Does it bother you to hear that? Is it good to be "addicted" to anything? What would being addicted to Halo look like? Read 1 Corinthians 6:11-13 in the NIV. What does it mean to be "mastered" by something? How can you make sure nothing masters you?

  • Think about these questions from pluggedinonline.com: "Can massacring computerized foes change the way [you] regard flesh-and-blood people? Can that change [how you] deal with the real world?" Does the fact that Halo's villains aren't humans make the violence different?

Girls Rock!

  • In this documentary, one staffer of a Rock 'n' Roll Camp for Girls says the camp is a place where "it's 100 percent OK to be exactly who you are." Why is a place like that needed? Where can you completely be you? What causes you to not be yourself?

  • One camper says, "Everyone needs to feel like someone gets them." What does that mean? Who really gets you? Another camper says, "I've been waiting so long to admit to myself I'm amazing." Why is it hard to say that? Do you think you're amazing? Why or why not? Read 1 Peter 3:3-4, Ephesians 2:10 and Psalm 139:1-18. What do these verses say about you?

  • Which girls in the movie do you most relate to? Why? What themes, quotes or ideas most stick with you? What friends of yours most need to hear the movie's messages about self-esteem? How can you affirm or encourage them?

Before watching or listening to anything mentioned here, please get advice and guidance from your parents or youth pastor.
