Out of the Desert
Krystal Meyers talks about her "dry season" of faith.
By Todd Hertz
My Dry Season: Before working on her new album, Make Some Noise, Krystal Meyers went through what she calls a "dry season" of faith. She wasn't happy. She wasn't spending time with God. And she says she lost sight of her true identity. "It was rough being on the road encouraging people to be who they were created to be while trying to find who I was," Krystal says.
Part of the trouble, she says, is that she was trying to define herself in the wrong ways. "I tried to be fulfilled through so many things other than God," she says. "But I learned the hard way that something might distract you or fill you for a while, but nothing can satisfy you fully but God. Nothing else is spiritual food. It's so easy to get caught up in things that just aren't eternal. And that's where I was."
The Hardest Part: Krystal knew the way out of her dry season. She needed to draw close to God through Scripture and prayer. "But the hardest part of my dry season was that I knew where I was and what to do, but I didn't do anything about it," she says. "I can't tell you how many times I'd find myself crying because I wasn't close to Godbut too apathetic and selfish to do anything about it. I was just like, Oh man, what's wrong with me?"
One day, her boyfriend asked what was wrong. She told him, "I know what I'm supposed to be doing. I really want God. I really need God. But I'm too selfish to choose God over all these meaningless things I'd apparently rather focus on. And it's killing me inside."
Together, they came up with ideas to jumpstart Krystal's devotional life. "But after that conversation, it was still another four months before I actually did something about it," she says. "But finally, I got back into the Word and prayer daily. Now, I'm in this wonderful place that feels like a breath of fresh air. Every day I think, Wow, Lord, you pulled me out of this spiritual desert, and I'm really experiencing your fullness."
