What's the Cost of Faithfulness?

On the first day of their life together, your mom and dad stood nervously in front of a church. They looked into each other's eyes, while the eyes of their friends and family looked at them.

Individually, your mom and dad made a decision. Then together, they openly professed it. The preacher said something like, "Repeat after me," and they repeated, making a public commitment, expressed in vows: "We will be faithful."

What does it mean to be faithful? It means, "I will keep my promises. I will honor my commitments, even when the cost is high. My word will mean something. If I say it, I will do it."

This is easy to understand as we think of those promises made at a wedding.

Now, imagine this: What if every promise you made carried the weight of a solemn vow, a commitment not easily broken?

Think about the promises you make. How faithful are you? How dependable is your word? Make it more specific: Can your parents count on your word? Are you where you say you're going to be? Do you come home when you say you will? If you agree to do a job, do you do it?

"Those who have been given a trust must prove faithful" (1 Corinthians 4:2).

If you've decided to follow God, you've been entrusted with God's riches in Christ and therefore must prove faithful in your commitment to him. It's the most important commitment of your life.

Jesus said we should "count the cost" of something before we commit to it. "Suppose one of you wants to build a tower," he said. "Will he not first sit down and estimate the cost to see if he has enough money to complete it?" (Luke 14:28). In other words, if all you want to do is make big plans, don't even bother with the building. Just talk about building. Hold up an architect's blueprint, and talk, talk, talk. But if you really intend to build, plan first, then follow through with the plan.

It's easy to say things like, "God, I'm going to follow you no matter what." But will you be faithful in the commitment? Have you counted the cost?

God wants us to be known by our faithfulness. Every commitment must carry the weight of a vow. But no commitment is more crucial than this one. No one is more deserving of our faithfulness than God.

From the Word:
"If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me." Mark 8:34

If you knew Christianity
was going to cost you something,
would you still believe?

The Power Pack Challenge
In this "Power Pack," we focus on faithfulness. We'd like to challenge you to study Scripture passages about faithfulness. Then, at the end of this Challenge, we hope you'll be able to say, "I'm a more faithful person!"

Read it!
As good as your word?

Maybe you've heard the phrase: "He's as good as his word." But how good is that? The saying means, "You can depend on him to keep his commitment." But some of us wouldn't want to be "as good as our word"; we'd want to be better than our word, because our word may not be so good.

One way to be "as good as our word" is to remember that these words go together: promise and faithfulness. The idea is, a promise made is a promise kept. That's faithfulness.

Let's begin by considering some specific promises made by God in Psalm 119. First, read the psalm, all 176 verses. Now, read it again, listing each promise you find. Some of them will be repeated or rephrased. Write them down each time. What does God expect of us? And what are some of his promises to us?

Consider this: God's example of faithfulness is an example we are expected to follow. We must learn to keep our word, as God kept his word, as he is keeping his word, as he will always keep his word.

Peter's struggle with faithfulness

The apostle Peter knew how to "look" and "talk" faithful, but he certainly had his share of problems putting his money where his mouth was.

Read Matthew 16:13-20. What does Peter say that sounds faithful? How does Jesus respond?

Now that Peter is feeling pretty "faithful," he goes on to blow it in the very next paragraph. Keep reading in Matthew 16, verses 21-23. What does Peter do and say? How does Jesus react? Was Peter still being faithful at this point?

Now keep reading. In verses 24-26, how does Jesus define faithfulness?

Turn to Matthew 26:31-35. Is Peter showing faithfulness here? Now skip ahead to verses 69-75. Was Peter as good as his word? How did he react when he realized he'd failed?

Fortunately, that's not the last we hear of Peter. Turn to Acts 2:14-41, and read one of the greatest sermons of all time. How did Peter turn out after all?

Work on It!
Here are some things to try:

  • Divide a sheet of paper in half. In one section, write: "It's hardest for me to keep my word when … " In the other section: "It would be easier for me to keep my word if … " Spend some time brainstorming each area.
  • Now, let's count the cost of following Christ. We know the rewards are great: heaven, truth, friendship with God. But have you ever counted the cost? On a sheet of paper, ask yourself some hard and honest questions:
  1. If I really follow Jesus, I might have to stop … "
Stop what? What are you doing that you shouldn't?
  2. If I really follow Jesus, people might think … "
Might think what? What's the risk to your reputation?
  3. If I really follow Jesus, I might be called to … " What?

You get the idea. See how many "costs" you can think of, then ask yourself: "Why is it worth it to pay the cost of following Jesus?"
