Can You Help?
real-life advice from readers
"My son doesn't want to go to school."
Debbie of North Dakota writes: "My 6-year-old son started kindergarten this year and doesn't like it at all. He says he'd rather stay home with me. Every morning is a battle with one of us ending up in tears. What can I do to make school more enjoyable for him?"
Here are your suggestions:
Talk to his teacher. Tell the teacher how your son feels and ask if he can have a special task in the classroom. If he has the feeling that his teacher really wants him there and needs him to help out, he might look forward to going to school.
Robin G. Orlando, Florida
Be a volunteer. Perhaps you can help grade papers, serve at snack time or read to the class. Seeing your face at some point during the day will make the separation easier and your son will see that school is such a great place to be, even Mom wants to be there!
Amy E. Levittown, New York
Take a picture. Buy a special wallet or small picture frame for your son to keep in his desk with a picture of the two of you in it. My daughter has a toy locket that she wears to school everyday. Whenever she needs me, she knows she can open the locket and I'm there with her. Our mornings are no longer filled with tears or anxiety.
Susan N. Farmington Hills, Michigan
Consider the alternatives. Home schooling might work for you. Teaching your child at home has many benefits. You can teach your son from a biblical perspective and you'll all enjoy the family unity homeschooling provides.
Find a special verse. Each morning, I give my son a Bible verse relating to joy. I draw a picture or write a little note next to the verse on a small piece of paper he can take to school with him. This reminds him that God is close to him and so is Mom!
Elizabeth E. Dayton, Tennessee
Help Me!
Karen in Bulgaria writes: "My 10-year-old son has been grinding his teeth since he was very young. The dentist suggested a mouthguard but he has trouble keeping it in all night. What else can we do?"
