Why Moms Need Each Other
By Carla Barnhill, Editor
Right now, my daughter is in her room screaming. The problem? The hard-boiled egg I made her for lunch a half an hour ago is now "too cold." Never mind that it was "too hot" 10 minutes ago. Ahh, the joys of parenting.
I recently went to something called a "Blessing Way Celebration" for a friend of mine who is expecting her second child. The idea was to "bless the way" for my friend as she prepared for the birth. The other women and I shared our thoughts and prayers, hoping to give her spiritual, mental, and physical strength for the ordeal of childbirth. As we talked, I felt a growing sense of sisterhood with these other women, many of whom I'd never met. Despite being strangers, we shared something elemental: We were mothers. The common experiences of nursing a baby, changing a diaper, calming a toddler, brought us together. Even though my friend was the center of the celebration, I know each of us left feeling renewed and grateful for the privilege of being a parent.
We all need a little bit of blessing along the parenting way, and the best place to get it is from one another. We might not always agree on how to discipline or whether to homeschool or what movies our kids should see. But the bottom line is that we all want God's best for our children and can all use a little support as we search for it. Whether it's a battle over cold eggs or something more serious, it's essential that we parents share our struggles and help one another as we raise our children.
In this issue of Christian Parenting Today, you'll find great ideas for handling your parenting challenges from experts who also happen to be parents and have been down this road, too. Dr. Henry Cloud, author of the book Boundaries with Kids (Zondervan), discusses the ways in which your child's friends contribute to his or her character development (page 30). Esther Ilnisky, who has helped children all over the world learn to pray from the heart, offers ideas for bringing out your child's innate connection with God (page 42). And Chris Lutes, editor of Campus Life magazine, our sister publication for teens, gives you some helpful advice on dealing with your young teen's musical tastes (page 38).
Consider yourself blessed.
