Always Near Me A Time for Everything
Written and illustrated by Susie Poole
(ZonderKidz) $6.99 each, 24 pages each
Ages 2-6
For preschoolers, faith is a complex mixture of mystery and practicality. They are able to understand that God is everywhere, and yet they want to know if God can really see them. They want to do the right thing, but they aren't always sure what that is. These sweet little board books translate biblical truths into kid language, making the sometimes-abstract concepts of faith real to young children. In A Time for Everything, based on Ecclesiastes 3, children discover that the ebb and flow of their days is all part of God's design for their lives. Always Near Me, based on Psalm 139, reassures children that they are never out of God's sight. Each of these books is short, simple, and plenty sturdy. They're sure to become family favorites.
PageLand
By David Hutchens, illustrated by Bobby Gombert
(Broadman & Holman) $14.99, 64 pages
Ages 10 and up
Don't be fooled by the small size and silly cartoon illustrationsthis book packs a theological wallop! While it might look like a book for children, the storyan allegory of the gospelis better suited to older children. Even teenagers will gain a deeper understanding of their need for salvation.
The book tells the story of PageLand, home to characters created by the author. But before long, the characters start to mess around with the author's story. They rip the pages, smudge the ink, even mix up the page numbers. But rather than ending the story, the author sends Arthur, a new character meant to bring some order back to PageLand. Some of the characters listen to Arthur and shape up, but others ignore him and stick to their old ways. Despite Arthur's warning that the book will be ending soon, the characters plot to get rid of him and write their own story. You can see where this is going.
This is a truly unique project, one that casts a new light on the story of Christ's sacrificial love for us. And it's so much fun, your kids just might want to share it with a friend.
Amazing Bible Stories for LeapPad
(LeapFrog/Zonderkidz)
LeapPad $49.99, book $14.99
Ages 4-7
If you haven't discovered the LeapPad learning system yet, here's a great reason to jump in, as it were. The LeapPad itselfan interactive electronic notebook that teaches reading, memorization, music, geography, and much morehas been around for a few years. What's new is the addition of a Bible-based activity book to go with it. In this case, Christian publisher Zondervan has developed a collection of seven Old Testament stories that work with the LeapPad technology to foster reading skills along with biblical literacy. Children can read the stories on their own or have them read by the LeapPad, then play games, answer questions, and sing songs related to the story. Because the LeapPad is an educational tool, children will also learn vocabulary words, figure out classification, and develop their comprehension abilities. It's wonderful to see the fantastic technology behind the LeapPad used to instill biblical truths as well as language skills.
Am I Praying?
Written and illustrated by Jeannie St. John Taylor
(Kregel) $12.99, 30 pages
Ages 4-8
Kids have all kinds of questions about prayer: Do you have to close your eyes? Do you have to fold your hands? Can God hear you no matter where you are? Does it count when I say, "Help me, God!"? The story of young Erik will answer these questions and more! As Erik heads off for a class trip to the zoo, it seems as if nothing is going his way. He can't find his favorite shirt, he gets teased on the bus, and has to sit by himself on the zoo train. By noon, Erik had gotten lost. Through all these mishaps, Erik talks with Godsometimes out loud, sometimes in his head, sometimes by simply basking in a warm ray of sunshine. The book not only offers examples of all the wonderful ways prayer can happen, but also ideas for talking about prayer with your child. There's even a suggested activity to help make prayer a regular part of your family routine. Take it from little Erik: talking to God can get a kid through even the roughest days.
