Something to Talk About
Nicole C. Mullen uses pumping beats, fun atmosphere to explore God's strength

TALK ABOUT IT
Nicole C. Mullen
Word

Talk About It proves that the success of Nicole C. Mullen's first (self-titled) album was no fluke. Mixing fast beats and soulful vocals, her second effort ranges in style from pumping hip-hop and R&B funk to heartfelt, moving ballads. Tracks are sprinkled with verse readings, cheerleader routines, and other touches that bring a sense of fun or poignancy. And, most important, her message comes through.

Mullen's lyrics clearly exalt key Christian themes. In the title track, Mullen declares: "Every knee shall bow / and every tongue confess / Jesus is marvelous. / Let the redeemed of the Lord say so."

In "Baby Girl," she lifts up a young friend by telling her, "Don't you know your worth? / You're a diamond hiding on a shelf. / God has made you a shining star."

In "Call on Jesus," Mullen reminds us where strength comes from: "Sometimes, I'm hiding away from the madness around me / But when I call on Jesus, / all things are possible."
