Style: Pop with some rock and jazz; compare to Madeleine Peyroux, Sarah Brightman, Sam Phillips

Top tracks: "Sweet Hand of Mercy," "Disintegration Man," "Baby Please Come Home Again"

Rebecca Pidgeon keeps a pretty full calendar as an actress—you may have seen her in TV's The Unit, or in some of the films of her husband, David Mamet—so it's a little miraculous that she finds time to make records at all, much less ones as fine and elegant as Slingshot. The album, made with producer Larry Klein and several members of the Joe Henry house band, is a model of subtle beauty and restraint. Highlights are the jazz-inflected "A Lonely Place," her exquisite plea for love and forgiveness in "Sweet Hand of Mercy," and a hooky, lightly rocking song called "Disintegration Man"—a savagely funny warning against looking for salvation from earthly princes and politicians.
