My Conversation with God
I had no idea what God would do when I asked him to use me.

Does God still speak? I grew up hearing testimonies about it, but until October 2005, I couldn't say it had ever happened to me.

I'm a middle-aged professor of theology at a well-known Christian university. ...

This is a very encouraging account--thanks for sharing! By the way, when will the book be out (or is it already)? Will it be published anonymously?

Thank you! I would bet your Theology classes are awsomely better! (Alive) St. Paul spoke to the philosophers on Marrs hill from his intellect - his education. A few were saved but we have no letter to the Athenian Church in our cannon of Scripture. (I see?) Paul kicking the same rock all the way to Corinth, where he sought to "know nothing among you but Jesus Christ and Him crucified. I came to you in fear and trembling - not with enticing words of mans wisdom (that hadn't worked very well), but in the power and demonstration of the Holy Ghost... (I just turned 75 & was raised with the KJV) Please find some way to let us know - sometime - where to get the book! mnjstevens@yahoo.com

I love this article! Its so real! Thanks for writting this. I'd like to believe that God can and will continue to surprise His people and the world with the different ways He chooses to do things.

Thank you for sharing openly and honestly about your struggle and eventual obedience to God. It's clear that we need to work out our salvation daily - no degree, title or like you said 'intellectual knowledge' will ever qualify us for knowing God completely! I was completely humbled by your story and touched! I pray I will be available for God to use me, like he used you.

Great, but it doesn't always happen so flawlessly. Maybe, though, it does, but we don't listen. The anonymous author is probably a good listener, is open to the workings of the Spirit. It encourages me to do likewise.

it does my heart good to know that God is still able to fix roofs and provide college tuition to the american middle class. perhaps He can explain why He chose to focus his time on those kind of things to the 18,000 children who will arrive in heaven today after starving to death in africa. our view of what God does and doesn't do is entirely focused on our lot in life, isn't it? perhaps we, in america, should be most ashamed of that.

john   Posted: March 12, 2007 1:14 AM
Nice story. But I still don't understand why the author would refuse to give his name. Is he being shameful that he used to think that God doesn't communicate audibly with us, only to be proven wrong?

This is a very inspiring story as I know that God, the Holy Spirit does speak and there are times when you do things you don't want to do but it's called being obediant to HIM. We are selfish beings and all the time want to keep things for ourselves but when you extend your hand and help others whether it is financially or in other ways, God opens ups doors that you didn't think possible. I had a roof situation a few years ago and I didn't know where I was to get the money to get a new one but listening to God's call, I did exactly what he told me to do and was blessed with all the money to pay the roofer on time. God is surely an awesome God and He is good all the time. Be blessed.

I really, really liked this article. But for a "professor of theology at a well-known Christian university. I've written award-winning books. My name is on Christianity Today's masthead...." who claims he is testifying about an experience with God, he has to call himself Anonymous.

mike rucker mrtullfan@bellsouth.net   Posted: March 10, 2007 4:05 PM
here's what i suggest: walk into your local christian bookstore, go to the magazine rack, open it to this article, wave it above your head, and say, "attention pray-mart shoppers, put down the book in your hands... throw out those dime-a-dozen tomes with the latest get-blessed-quick scheme, and listen to this Secret Formula: one God, who *decides* to make himself known; and one man, who has decided to listen. that's it. a miracle cure. works anytime, anywhere, any place, regardless of race, creed, color, national origin, or party affiliation." you realize this article is as descriptive of God's work within our world as any of those other 666 - sorry, 66 books, right? one God. one man. heck, we'll even throw in the man's neighbor. combine ingredients. mix. stir. do not cover.

Isn't it odd that a seminary professor at a Christian university would have to remain anonymous when talking about God speaking to him or her? I applaud this individual's courage to confess his or her interaction with God, but I bemoan the situation that prevents full disclosure.

Thank you for sharing your story. I, too, am a skeptic when it comes to hearing from God, even though I'm a Believer in Christ's birth, life, and resurrection, the most supernatural events of all time! I am blessed to be reiminded that He is working around me every day, and might even work through me if I'll just listen! As to why it should be anonymous, perhaps out of sensitivity to the young man who has received all the financial aid? And most importantly the point of the story is not who gave or received the money, but Who orchestrated all of the events. When names are attached to people involved in such events, we fleshy creatures tend to give glory to the people involved, and not God who truly deserves the glory.

Yes, God does sometimes speak in ways that suprise us if we will be obedient so that God can bless. Thanks for sharing!

I've been asking myself this same question for many weeks which is why I read the article. I took a walk after I read it and prayed through it as if I were narrating the story to others. I see many encouraging and foundational things in this story: God answers prayer and uses our experiences and skills to accomplish His will: God makes it very clear that He is the one behind the work (witness the fact that this book came together so quickly with a successful topic); God uses others to help accomplish His work; God stays true to His purpose as evidenced when the author had other plans for the money: God is doing many things at one time and it's not always about us: God stays in the lead even when we try to take charge (witness the author's efforts to get the school to bend the rules for the student) God's timing is perfect as the necessary funds came in from other sources; God knows our desires and provides for us even when we don't ask ( he got a new roof!).

God is so awsome; words can not describe. Professor, I thank you for sharing your story. While one may take this story as being one about listening to God's voice, I take as that and a lesson in obediance and fatih. Not only did your spirit open up to hear God's voice, but you were obedient to his instructions and faithful to His promise. I am working on being obedient to my Father's counsel and direction; it's not always easy. This message has been one of invaluable encouragement. Thank you once again for sharing.

THIS IS REALLY PROFOUND, TO KNOW THAT GOD STILL SPEAKS TO HIS CHILDREN, IN VERY SIMPLE WAYS, ONCE HE SPEAKS WE SHOULD BE OBEDIENT AND WILLING TO TAKE ACTION AS HE HAS INSTRUCTED US TO DO.KNOWING FULLY WELL THAT WITH GOD ALL THINGS ARE POSSIBLE.

powerful! a confirmation of a similar happening just recently when I thought some extra money I made was mine..thanks for the encouragement and bodly sharing your story

I have had similar experiences with obeying God-the outcome is terrific. I think the author was wise to not publish his own name-that way God gets all the glory, and rightfully so. We are only the messengers, so we do not deserve the credit or the glory. Only God should have that-he will reward us in time.

"Out of the blue, a book title came to me.... Then, in almost the same instant, the entire outline of the book was there in my mind. Every chapter and its title. No discursive thought preceded it. I immediately went home and began writing. As I wrote, I had the distinct feeling that this was not me. I had never written like this before. The words poured out. Two weeks later, a 200-page manuscript sat on my desk. I knew it was good." Everyone argues about how God inspired the writing of the Scriptures: i.e., whether the human authors were merely taking dictation; whether God superintended what they wrote, regardless of whether or not they were aware that they were writing Scripture; how much of the writers' personalities and styles vs. God's exact words were used. In Jeremiah 36 the prophet wrote and then rewrote God's exact words. Perhaps the anonymous author's incident confirms the Bible's testimony that "the Word of the LORD came to..." and lets us know how such can happen.

Obedience is the key. When we hear God speak to us, we must listen and obey, even if we don't understand. Your a great witness to the Lord. Thanks for sharing that powerful message. Everytime I come across a testimony like yours, I feel uplifted and closer to God. In the past, God spoke to me and told me to stay in my marriage no matter what. I didn't want to because of the way I was treated, but I did obey him. Now my husband is a Christian and I wouldn't have this blessing if I wouldn't have listened to God.

Our Lord does speak to us in ways that we cannot shake off as being chance. Recently I took over a company that was being closed down. Shortly into negotiations I made a comment to the Lord that I was so far out of my league that it wasn't funny. It was as if the Lord placed His hand on my shoulder and said "You ain't out of my league. The negotiations went well and the company is doing very well. It is His company.
