Witness Lee in the Dock
Evangelical leaders prod Local Church on founder's teachings.

An ad hoc group of 60 evangelical leaders published an open letter in January challenging Living Stream Ministry (LSM) to disavow controversial statements from founder Witness Lee, who died in 1997. The ...

The author of that article, Mark Kellner, appears to be biased. A Seventh-day Adventist himself, he does not appear to understand the theological issues involved. He has declared the Local Church to be orthodox in nature. He also has stated that the Local Church was right in taking legal action against Harvest House and the authors of the Encyclopedia: http://www.apologeticsindex.org/l40.html#kellner

I am a little surprised how LSM can still justify use of lawsuits. They say it has happned only three times. In fact many more litigations were settled out of court. Groups and writers could not keep up with legal costs. A person who spoke out were informed by lawyers that the local church will use all their resourcs to "defend God's Work." Local radio stations and publishing companies do not have a million dollars. So they give up. Their interpretation of 1 Corinthians 6 infers that it is not relevant because we don't know the lawsuits that Paul is speaking about. Well we do. It is a lawsuits where the person maybe WRONGED and the judge is outiside the church." The LSM say they were wronged . . . maybe. They have been defrauded of members by other churches. Paul says, "Why not rather be wronged." If the Supreme Court says you are a heretic "does it matter?"

The following statement is misleading. It does not properly portray the situation. "...In response to a Harvest House Publishers suit against them, LSM/Local Churches sued the publishing house and authors John Ankerberg and John Weldon ..." It misleads the reader to think that Harvest House filed a suit in an unreasonable manner. This was not the case. The FAQ's on their web site give their perspective on this situation. This statement speaks of "appearances" and not "underlying reality". See their FAQ to balance the perspective provided in this article. I do not represent Harvest House, but I do moderate an internet forum dedicated to the topic of the Local Churches and stay informed on the situation. Related site is an Internet discussion forum dedicated to Nee, Lee and the Local Churches - http://www.thebereans.net/forum2/forumdisplay.php?f=342

I am one of the ones involved in this mess! Brother Witness Lee would have verbally spanked these brothers! Our morning meetings were disrupted by those wishing exclusive use of LSM material for nearly a year. We finally had to lock the doors and meet in homes (not bad). However, LSM hired attorneys to seize the property. We are a small group of people in Ohio, most of whom are retired...it will be the Lord's mercy if we don't loose everything in this. My heart is broken. I apprealed to LSM to stop the interference and was told that they were "upset" with me. God have mercy on us all.

The open letter should have listed examples of litigation such as seizing property from flocks that used to purchase LSM publications for use in Sunday services, so they can appoint new pastors who will purchase only LSM publications.

I wonder how many of the signers of this open letter have carefully studied Lee's teachings. Some reckoning of their authority to speak on Lee's work would be nice. How about a poll of how many of Lee's books has each of the signers read?

Since the interaction between the parties seems to be ongoing, positive, and nonargumentative, this article is fair and objective. - A statement of matters up to this point. - Let's hope that the interaction can continue this way.
