Singaporean theologian Simon Chan says 'missional theology' has not gone far enough.

Simon Chan may be the world's most liturgically minded Pentecostal. The Earnest Lau professor of systematic theology at Trinity Theological College in Singapore is both a scholar of Pentecostalism and ...

Jesus made it clear when dealing with the Pharisaic philosophies or theologies as they viewed their attempts to improve on the Mosaic Law and God’s endeavors to get man to face our sinful nature and turn to Him for forgiveness. Man’s attempts to improve on what God outlined for us can be traced through the history of the human race. Liturgical practices and the theologies they are based on are diversions from the teachings we see throughout the Bible and especially those of Jesus. Why does any church leader or believer think it necessary to invent a concept such as catechism to help people become part of the body of Christ? This notion has been the genesis of many cult followings; just look at our history! Where is rote learning in the teachings of Jesus? The early believers literally suffered for Christ; they didn’t suffer for the Lord through catechisms! The point was made that we cannot control God; we cannot improve upon His flawless plan with our flawed intentions either.

Philosophy and all human contribution pales into insignificance when placed alongside the beatitudes as a measure. My life has to measure up to the Sermon on the Mount and falls short especially when my spiritual calling gives way to my intellect working selfishly to justify my thoughts and deeds. The bible was written for the common person to understand. Why do we complicate matters? Live simply by coming to God in spirit and in truth and become aware of your 'place at table'; find the true place and peace and contentment results through the work The Lord provides as you are called out to follow. May the peace of The Lord Christ go with you.

Great interview. Especially illuminating on the ways in which God uses the Church in all of it various froms and manifestations to His ends. This is a reminder that it God's purposes which are ultimatley being served and not our own.

You know, I comment negatively when articles seem to be less than discerning. I don't want to be seen as negative though. This was a great interview with a man of real spiritual substance. Thanks for showing this great thinker who has his finger on the pulse of missions and still have a real head for the deeper things of Christianity. Liturgy is one of the areas in evangelicalism that is neglected and I thank you for showing this.

Excellent interview on a most important subject. Hopr to see more on the importance of liturgy in the mission of the church.
