Q&A: Rep. Heath Shuler
Shuler, a Democratic Congressman from North Carolina who ran as a social conservative, defeated a Republican incumbent in 2006.

Why do you think born-again Christians should care about politics?

I wasn't raised as someone who said I was a born-again Christian. I grew up in a Baptist church, and it was more or less, "You're a Christian." ...

Heath Schuler is the "right politician." Not worrying about "what sells more in politics," but speaking with guts about the truth about all religions. Great interview. Congratulations CT !!

Schuler is ducking. He has disappointed many of us in NC by not agressively voting for and representing the Gospel as he says he would and claims he does.

The reader responses to this article are more revealing than the article itself. Apparently a great many evangelical Christians are so embittered by their failed move into politics, and so doctrinaire in their approach to moral issues that they cannot tolerate even one of their own who dares to do what politicians ought to be doing: admit that legislation won't solve social ills, and that only community and church can. Abortion is caused by a breakdown of family, church and community. Legalizing abortion won't fix the problem. Attempting to ban abortion won't fix the problem. Shuler offends you because he says the truth.

Mark Roberts is dead on in his review of this interview. Democrat or Republican, the non-answers Shuler gives to the questions posed are part of the problem we have in our country right now. People who are elected to represent the people (both Christian and Non) cannot articulate their positions until they put their fingers in the breeze to see which way the wind of public opinion is blowing. To act like Jesus would not be concerned over the " Big two" is ridiculous at best, and niave at worst. Until Christians demand that BIBLICAL "core values", not "American" core values, are upheld, we will keep getting more of the same. Heath Shulers who have no opinion, only rhetoric filled ramblings that require no stance at all.

Vapid, sound-byte answers without much bite. I'm not even sure why this interview-lite is posted. How'd this man get elected? Football fame? His response to the question about responding to abortion through legal measures is breath-taking in its real or feigned ignorance of what a legislator is elected to do. Let's see: pass laws that carefully avoid taking positions on the day's moral and controversial issues? My guess is that Shuler's election is another disappointing victory of image over word and substance.

I'm with you Sterling, AND with Rep. Shuler: It's not about party, and Republicans--as is increasingly obvious--certainly don't hold the monopoly on morals and values. When we as Christians are about more than the "Big Two" issues, when we care enough to provide compassion, assistance, training, accountability (as Jesus did in three years with the 12 and His other followers), abortion rates WILL go down. The church--the Body of Christ--will either do what the Word calls it to, or it will complain when government tries, and fails, to take up the slack.

I'm not sure how the star system works, because I wanted to give four positive stars to this article. I believe people of faith can be found in both political parties. I'm tired of hearing fellow "Christians" bashing those who do walk in lockstep with their "core American values." Some of those core American values do not fit into my understanding of Christ's call to discipleship and sacrifice. I'm pleased that CT is seeking to share views and opinions that don't fit neatly into the "core Amercian Values" Box. What about our core Christian values, don't they come first?

Mr. Shuler may say he's conservative, but as long as he aligns himself with a party that promotes bills that harm the American fabric, he in fact is liberal. His party elected an extremely leftist person from a district that does not represent core American values and I don't hear him oppose the Speaker of the House on any major issues. I'm not happy with CT or Shuler dodging tough issues.

I'm a little disappointed that CT didn't hold Mr. Shuler's feet to the fire when he avoided answering some of your questions. For example, you asked "What legal measures do you support to reduce the number of abortions?" His answer was essentially that it isn't a legal issue, and it's important to tackle the issue in the community and the church. It's true that the community and church must be involved in limiting abortion. But legal measures have been used to promote abortion, and until legal measures are taken to limit/end it, the rule of law will continue to mitigate against the life of every unborn child in America. Sorry CT, I think you could have done better.
