Presidential Clones
All three candidates have voted to fund embryonic stem-cell research.

Scientists and ethicists are anticipating more federal funding for embryonic stem-cell research after President Bush leaves office next year.

None of the presidential candidates are as strict as Bush, ...

Let's not be hypocrites people. Speaking out to protect the lives of the unborn while supporting a war of choice is a weak stance. Shouldn't a pro-life position include all life?

I just today attended a seminar about stem cell research, led by Dr. Clem Persaud. He made it very clear that adult stem cells can be just as effective (or even more effective) than embryonic cells! In the United States there are 400,000 frozen embryos, created life to be killed. Sad to see John McCain would support such research!

Ron Paul. That's all I have to say.

The fact is scores of diseases have been and are treated using stem cells derived from sources other than embryoes. The NIH admits on their website that a whole list of requirements needs to be met before embryonic stem cells could be effective in treating anything. It's a pipedream and ideologically motivated by the pro-abortion lobby. Stick with the morally licit options and we'll be fine. Support the morally abusive options and we'll be damned.

Robert George's comment about 'cloning' is simply ignorant. Therapeutic cloning is not creating humans; it's creating liver tissue, or pancreatic tissue, or whatever is needed, that perfectly matches the patient's needs, because it's created from his/her own stem cells. Before fundamentalists jump in with shrill rhetoric, they need to be informed about the science they seek to derail. Galileo had the last word - even though he was dead. The fundies will not be able to repress this science forever, either. Articles like this one throw fuel on the fire, without doing anything to staunch the river of ignorance that spews from politicians and pulpits alike.

I believe that evangelicals right now are being extremely foolish in still hammering on backing only a "real" conservative such as Huckabee (whom I supported with donations). Let's get realistic. This is going to be a CLOSE general election again in November, probably as contentious as in 2000 in FL and in 2004 with Kerry, if not more contentious. In publicly and vociferously chipping away at McCain's conservative fiber, single-issue evangelicals are eroding McCain's probable ability to defeat Obama or Hillary, especially by attracting moderate conservatives and conservative Democrats. I think the fact that the primaries went for McCain is because Americans across the board do not want extreme left or right idealogues. They want a candidate who knows that MODERATION is key in every type of decision-making process we make in life. By holding out for the "perfect" stem-cell refuser and loudly opposing McCain, anti-funding people could get us Obama/Hilary and 32-week abortion allowed!

I recently read that scientists have been able to reprogram adult skin cells to behave like stem cells. That gives them a way to acheive results without ethical questions. Has anyone else heard of this?

As a father who lost a daughter at a very young age due to a heart defect I believe we must CAREFULLY persue stem-cell research. Like most things it shows a lot of promice but not without some danger.
