Seriously Disturbed
Talk and Walk
Getting our body in sync with our message.

On a gray winter's day in Kiev (Kyiv), Ukraine, I walked the halls of a monastery-turned-hospital, its tile floors smoothed down by the footsteps of monks.

People newly diagnosed with HIV come to this ...

This is in reference to the comment posted by Nanajody... I don't think it's fair to say that we need to hear less from Rick and Kay Warren. Instead I would say that we all ought to DO more of what Kay and Rick Warren preach. Time to put all that we read in books into practice. No need to travel to other countries. We can find adults and children who desperately need help right here in North America.

I have been working with PLHA for the last 20 years, I have lost few of my relatives now an HIV+ widow with three children two of them HIV+ lives with me and my wife. Taking care of the widows and orphans must be a calling for all Christians. We need to ask now what drastic action are to be taken by Christians to control the spread of HIV. Christians have failed to to think radically and speak out to all the injustice practiced including Christians. The spread of HIV will not stop because we took care of those infected or affected. Change in lifestyle and sexual behaviour is the only solution.

These situations exist all over the world and all through time. It is indeed in the nature of the Born agan believer to reach out..To provide any help one can. Remember however that prayer is not inaction! Prayer is not without power. While you are considering to move the feet as evidence of belief remember that Christian fruit of the Spirit is not limited nor bound by any certain interpretation of action. When we accept Jesus Christ the Angels sing. That, my dear brothers is the first fruit of a christian. Everey Believer somewhere, sometime will inevitably produce fruit. You may wish to continue on with quantity issues as relates to Salvivic behaviour, I personally ask God to relieve me of any guilt generated by those who would set out standards of behavior for me. The scripture, by the way, regarding these issues must be understod within the context of the entire Bible.

This was an eye opening article, written with compassion, by Kay Warren. I also think about the fact that sometimes people can spend so much time criticizing each other and it is important that we remember that faith without works is dead. We do have to put works and concern to our prayers and faith. Ignoring the worlds problems or not reading about them will not make them go away. We truly are the body of Christ and must continue to strive to occupy, be salt and light, and turn the tide for the next generation until Jesus comes again. May Jesus bless Kay Warren for her concern about others through out the world.

For 60 years I have been surrounded by congregations declaring "We are saved by grace, not works!" Hence, there have been few works, but many jestures and $ contributions so we can feel good about ourselves. It is a grand delusion, IMO. What good is a hospital that doesn't want to admit sick people. Off point? Those of us who have experienced God's grace in unbelievable fashion, are not welcome in so many churches. Who are we? Alcoholics, addicts, homeless, unemployed, mentally ill, criminal record, or just plain POOR. I once listened to an old skid road man gave a speech at an AA meeting. He said "Don't preach to me, show me" and sat down. In the first chapter of the Bible, the question is asked: Who am I, my brother's keeper? I am of the opinion that "we are his hands and we are his feet". When I stand before God in judgement, I will not be concerned about his grace. I will be hope that I wil have been able to use my hands and my feet.

give what you have without legalism   Posted: June 06, 2008 7:14 AM
Our task is to be careful and to love rather than worrying about being legalistic. The bible is clear that we do not need letters of recommendation in ink but we are to be letters about Jesus. So, when Jesus said we must be like the Good Samaritan it does not mean we first must anguish about kind deeds and then in anguish about our kindness do kind deeds, but rather we should remember proudly that we are the children of Abraham amd the children of Jesus and they were and are kind. Kindness and a clean heart already is the reward. Not giving alms to everyone. The apostles in the book of acts could not afford to give money to the beggar but thgey had a hidden treasure, namelt the gift of healing. If you have the gift of teaching then teaching is your treasure. Do not get caught up anguishing over whether you have to give money and time to the poor but give whatever you have been given by God. By the way; I agree with Matt: He has heard from God because God said the same to me recently.

I totally agree with the comments made by Matt and Thom. We need to hear more of the Word of God, and less from Kay and Rick Warren.

This is a good atricle, albeit to soon to be considered effective. The Russian Governmnent is overly sensitive to any kind of "foreign" suggestions. And this includes all other(exept Orthodoxy,) "meddling" in their affairs right now. However, in the short term Evangelicals WILL influence their attitudes because the ACTION IS needed NOW.

Sterling, What always keeps me focused on intertwining care of spiritual and physical needs is Matthew 28:19 Go therefore and make disciples..... and I try to use it in all endeavors. Meeting the physical needs develops the relationship that allows you to discuss the Gospel.

I am so Saddened by this story, and yet I am not surprised. being in ministry myself for far to long I have watched what I have come to call fluff Chritianity here in America, the old I'll pray for you brother, rather then I'll help you brother. The so called body of Christ could learn a lot from There brethren in other countries where life isn't so comfortable, where the thinking and mind of Christ are exemplified in being a blessing rather then receiving a blessing, to feed, cloth and care for one another, then to purchase a 23,000 dollar commode. May The Great I AM and our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ the Holy Lamb of God have mercy on his end time Body.

I agree with Elly. The woman's reaction is certainly defensible. I'm also curious to know for sure if the boy was rescued and is all right.

elly   Posted: June 05, 2008 11:54 AM
good article, but i feel the criticism of the old woman is a bit harsh - especially if she's living alone, she has good reason to fear being attacked or killed for her apartment or possessions. unfortunately, lots of elderly have been victimized in this way.

Now you're talking about people worthy of the name Christian. The vast majority of us are authentic phonies, that is, we really believe we're sincere.
