Cheating Death
NASCAR reminds us of how much we have to lose.

NASCAR embodies a brave and futile rejection of Benjamin Franklin's famous aphorism, "In this world, nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes." In this way, it is a gospel sport, because ...

so does this mean Jesus doesn't like NASCAR too?

The article reads as though CT had some marketing initiative to mention NASCAR in order to sell magazines and Mr. Galli went through the motions and cranked out some words. What a vapid, cynical effort. It can be summed up as, "Well, I like NASCAR, and I like Jesus, so I'm sure the two are related somehow."

I agree with the comment above; what does the insane activity of people unnecessarily risking their necks for some cash and a thrill have to do with Christianity? If people want to engage in NASCAR racing, fine; it's a free country. But to associate with this insanity a glamour on a level with the drama of Jesus' sacrifice (which to me also appears unnecessary) is unwise. Supposedly Jesus died so you wouldn't have to; do you honor him by putting your life on the line for an adrenaline rush??

Silly. Stupid. That is the difference between our faith, and reckless displays of bravado. This weekend's fair featured bull riding. Each contestant paid $250 to enter; only 2 even made the 8 second minimum ride, and the winner, who got rolled on and stepped on and injured, won $3000. No one mentioned the cost of his medical treatment and rehab. And everybody continued to hoot and holler like it was a good thing. This is not sport. Running is a sport. High jump is a sport. This is just foolishness that takes the spectators to the lowest possible level, akin to Romans at the Circus Maximus. We pay people to sacrifice themselves for the entertainment value. Doesn't look much like Good Friday to me.

I hadn't made this connection with racing but glad to see it. I have with some other sports though. It seems to me that sports at their finest are spiritually inspiring even though you rarely see this commented on. Paul - originalfaith.com PS I wanted to make it five star but could only get the one...!
