Catholic Bishops Warn Obama Against Expanded Abortion Rights
Freedom of Choice Act would coerce Americans and limit freedoms, they warn.

The leading U.S. Catholic prelate warned Wednesday (Nov. 12) that President-elect Barack Obama's promise to unify the country would be shattered if he pursues policies to increase access to abortion.

"If ...

I think JD has the wrong focus. The problem today is not economic crisis, which is only the symptom. It is greed, and never-fulfilled materialistic desire. We cannot use this as an excuse for ignoring living out the conviction of our faith. Let us not use terms to demean the church, whether Catholic or Protestant. The Catholic Church is not tearing the country apart. They are speaking the truth of God, and are also protecting those unfairly suffering from the consequence of "abortion rights', namely, African-American women who have a much higher rate of abortion than Anglo women. Isn't it ironic that people voted for Mr. Obama because of economic reasons now see the financial market has declined much quicker since his election. Perhaps people who have money think otherwise. The lesson is never to make important life decisions based on money!

So these Catholic Bishops would rather see this country be torn apart than back down from their attempts to institutionalize and politicize Christian ethics. You know what it reminds me of? One of the two women who came before Solomon regarding the right to the baby, who called on him to cut the baby in half rather than relinquish it to the other woman (which is ironic given that this issue is about abortion). Now is NOT the time to be threatening this kind of divisiveness. WAKE UP, CHRISTIANS!! The economy is falling apart, our infrastructure is crumbling and our educational system is failing. Those are our priorities now. We have to chose our battles wisely. I oppose abortion as much as any other God-fearing person but our first priority must be to unite around the President-Elect to tackle these serious threats to the stability of our country. If we don't there won't be a public square left to have the abortion debate.

I appeal on my knees to Christians that abortion is a sytemic problem and not just a right-to-life issue. Society (including Christinas) has to completely re-evaluate itself as to whether it is birth-friendly in all cases! Women should not fall pregnant inappropriately in the first place; and if they do the full power of the church and society should be there to support them in giving birth in a loving and nurturing environment. Men should also not put their "lovers" in position where they could end up pregnant irresponsibly and out of wedlock. Society too should re-evaluate women's role in our career-driven society so that when career women fall pregnant their should be every resource made available to them for them to happily have the child. Society has to completely re-evaluate itself as to whether it is birth-friendly in all cases! Putting an enforced halt on abortion without careful re-contruction of society into a birth-friendly society ignores all the trends young people follow.

Absolutely, I agree with Carl. In my opinion, abortion, homosexual agenda, and embryonic cell research are the triad of evil in our time. Those are all against the principle of life God instituted. If Adam incurred sin and death by eating of the Tree of Knowledge, we incur the wrath of God, which will be final, irrevocable, definite, by trespassing the Tree of Life. It is too much for God to tolerate. Our nations stands under judgment. It is only the grace of God that allows us to continue at present. We have rebelled so much and wandered so far. We are so arrogant in our sinfulness and deserve great judgment. I see God is on the move. Let's pray for the Third Great Awakening through which God will harvest His chosen people. Come Lord, Amen.

To claim to be a Christian, in my view, means that your stance on individual human life should be unequivocally pro-life, and opposed to abortion without any reservation or condition. Today the litmus test for any politician, judge or candidate for office seems to rest on one's opinion regarding Roe vs Wade, which in my judgment has no foundation in the U.S. Constitution and should be overturned as soon as it can be. All we can hope and pray for is that the President-Elect may be moved by the indwelling of the Holy Spirit to accept the God-given right for human life at any stage.
