Religulous

Let's face it: most documentaries these days don't bother to document anything in an objective, journalistic sense. We can thank Michael Moore for re-conceiving the documentary film as something akin ...

He hits the nail on the head in this movie and everyone should watch it. I grew up in a very christian family and attended church every sunday for 14 years and never saw anything that would give me reason to believe that it isnt anything but a fairy-tale people cling to because they fear death. faith is an excuse to follow blindly... and the "Bible" is a "book" not the word of GOD and has been disproven repeatedly through science and "accurate" History. it preaches death, rape, murder, and prejudice and people make up excuses to defend it.....its really pathetic and ignorant.

The faithful should be just that: based on faith. Where the Religious blow it is in the literal belief, instad of just taking it on faith, as one should. Then we wouldn't have to "defend" it to anyone! The good thing, it seems to me, about this movie, is showing exactly that, that is we take the Bible literally we open ourselves to all manner of ridicule, but if we realize that it's all a metaphor for what we should do, then what can they say? BIll Maher made this point very clearly to me, I hope he can do the same for you.

PMD, did you just say you would give Stein more credit? Come on now... You are just making Bill Maher look even better!

Seems that religion helps the masses by giving them hope that death is not permanent...that is if you happen to worship the correct deity the correct way.

Wow. It's always when people are most defensive that their opinions seem to carry the least weight. The saddest thing about religion, as far as I'm concerned, is that nobody is allowed to poke fun at it. I'm not religious - not even remotely - but I do think that faith is a truly beautiful thing, if you are lucky enough to have it. It's just a shame that so many of those with faith aren't open to having that faith made light of occasionally. That's part of life. It is HUMAN to laugh at yourself, surely?

Those who think that Maher's "documentary" is on the mark ought to watch Ben Stein's "Expelled" and explain to us why Stein is so wrong and Maher so right. I'd give Stein a lot more credit for at least showing respect to those he interviews.

We are at an exciting time as a species. We are learning more and more about the universe, sub atomic particles and everything in between. We will soon realize that a belief in child like story's from primitive man and following ancient rituals is not beneficial to our growth as a human race, but a hinderance.

Jake--that's the argument you want to make? That religion is unreasonable because some people believe the story of Jonah? Could you have picked an even less important hook to hang your argument upon? The historical veracity of the story of Jonah is insignificant next to the message the book of Jonah conveys--which just happens to be one of tolerance towards those who believe differently from you (a message I think you may need to re-examine). I think you should seek to understand what the Christian faith is really about before you choose to ridicule it. What you've said clearly reveals you don't understand it at all.

"This film doesn't make it clear why he hates [religion] so, aside from some comments about how Catholicism "wasn't relevant" to his life as a child." I think that Maher makes it very clear why he views religion to be a destructive force. Did you really sit through this whole film and still fail to even register the points the man was making? Here are a couple of quotes to jog your memory: "If you believe that the world is going to come to an end, perhaps any day now, does it not drain one's motivation to improve life on Earth while we're here?" "Faith means making a virtue out of not thinking." "Those who preach faith, who enable and elevate it, are our intellectual slave-holders, keeping mankind in a bondage to fantasy and nonsense that has spawned and justified so much lunacy and destruction. Religion is dangerous because it allows human beings who don't have all the answers to think that they do."

Obviously a Christian website will attack a movie that is trying to show how unreasonable religion is. Honestly do you Christians really believe a man lived inside of a large fish for 3 days?

This film is not sensationalistic at all, and the only people that botch the interviews are the interviewees. Maher isn't an atheist, he is an agnostic; obviously this guy doesn't understand the difference. Maher repeatedly shows understanding for those who don't interpret their religions literally. The entire point of the movie is not to sabotage religion, but to show that people are tossing intelligence and common sense aside for blind faith. What kind of christian judges somebody based on their occupation "What do you expect to happen when Maher stops at a truck-stop chapel in North Carolina to quiz long-haul truckers about biblical inconsistencies?" not jesus....asshole.

Great to see 2 things here: good comments and a review of this particular movie on a christian site. I really liked the movie and i think he raised a lot of questions. (of course not new, but important questions) To everybody: go watch the movie and think about it

We are a nation that is unenlightened because of religion. Bill Maher has brought atheism and agnostic ideas into play in modern America. It's sad that we can't elect leaders based off their political ideals with out bringing in the question of "God." The day that Americans elect a non-christian president is the day that enlightenment returns to this once great nation. If you are able to tolerate the concept of "what if," I urge you to watch this film.

Of course a Christian Movie Website is going to give this anti-religion movie a horrible rating. Pathetic. I'll be surprised if this is even posted. GREAT MOVIE. WATCH IT.

Loved this movie. Finally someone is saying exactly what I've been thinking for so long. Although I've seen the bad and good religion can do I truly believe religion is a dumbing-down of humanity. A way to control and profit off of human nature. Take the guy who called himself the second coming of christ... hey he had about 10,000 followers, true believers. Outrageous. I also enjoyed Maher calling on all of us Anti-Religious people to speak up. Anti-Religous sounds harsh but its the truth... "religion must die for mankind to live." Amen!!!

This movie was fantastic.... I hope it gave people a chance to think about the lunacy religion creates in the way we treat one another.

Allen   Posted: June 18, 2009 7:36 AM
This is a great and long overdue movie. I hope that people from all religious backgrounds could watch it with an open mind instead of prejudging it based upon Maher's background. If you open your mind to the facts provided it just may open your eyes to what is wrong with much of the world.

Maher did a very good job. He asked many people questions, not just truckers. He asked a whole range of people from truckers to a senator. "What do you expect to happen when Maher stops at a truck-stop chapel in North Carolina to quiz long-haul truckers..." I don't want to say anything bad about the reviewer but this is very judgemental. The truckers seemed like the more devout and open minded group. Who are you to judge them? The editing done was definitely to add effect and was predictable but he is a very sarcastic person. He gave everyone a fair chance to voice their side just as he voiced his. Good documentary, bad review.

I loved the documentary. Honestly, wake up and have a starbucks. The best analogy... "off course Santa Clause is fake.. how could he get to all of those places at one time... But it is completely believable to have one guy who hears everybody at the same time. Most religions are disturbing.

The review written by Brett McCracken only strenghtens Bill's documentary. Brett would have fit in nicely with all of the other religious sheep interviewed in the movie. It is a very predictable review and I personally am more impressed by the "Christ like" response and tolerance of the long haul truckers than the close mindedness of McCracken.

This movie can be described in one word, brilliant. Bill Maher is a hilarious intellectual human being. It analyzes "religion" in a way that makes you contemplate and consider. The people who he interviews when being questioned never actually have a ligitement response, they are dumbfounded and frankly look ignorant. The film is unique and should have been made a long time ago. You can't deny the truth and logic and realism of this film.

Stenberg   Posted: May 25, 2009 7:23 PM
This movie is good, because it tells all of us that we need to be more educated. Don't be follower but rather become an investigator to the answers to these relatively simple questions he asks.
