THROWING INKWELLS
California's Temper Tantrum
How the gay rights movement lost more than Proposition 8.

Obnoxious mobs that won't tolerate disagreement don't usually win supporters.

A manager at a Los Angeles Mexican restaurant was targeted for her $100 contribution in support of traditional marriage. Protesters ...

Edmund Burke said, "All that is required for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing." He was so right! gay marriage is a "perversion" of what God meant and established for man and woman.

Thank God for people like Mollie who bravely stand up for the rights of the majority and work to keep the holy pure and free from the taint of the sinful world! Historically, The Chosen Sheep can always count on stalwart souls like hers to keep uppity folk like blacks, Jews, and other disagreeables from being treated like human beings. We have lost some ground in recent generations, but this is our battle now! If so-called "Christians" ever begin to treat those horrible, yucky gays like we would wish to be treated, surely we deserve the judgement of Heaven! Special thanks to CT as well for standing up for Gospel Truth in such a compromising age.

I am surprised at the CT article calling a tantrum for the response to the Gay Community many years of suffering silently to the abuse of Christians sitting on their high clouds of moral self righteouness. There will be many surprises ahead even to the extent of our rights as Christians being compromised - because what you sow is what is reap. If CT calls itself a magazine of evangelical persuasion, I suggest it return to focus on this conviction. Invading other kingdoms and then looking surprised when they do respond in kind is kind of expected. Let's return to proclaiming Christ and not be distracted lest the Lord comes back and found us wanting. www.psa91.com

Here's how I've started to help change: 1. Love Jesus Christ above all. 2. Love your neighbor as yourself. 3. Pray for change (not the Obama kind, the Jesus kind) 4. Be proactive with your children. Remember, YOU are the ones to raise them, not public school, not video games, and definitely not any form of liberal media. 5. Cut cable television. Why not? Nothing but filth, even on the commercials. 6. Find out who gives to what and boycott. 7. Don't complain about how much of a burden this will be, just do it.

In time, God in Jesus Christ WILL in fact deal with all those who support and defend the so-called "gay rights" and it is sad that they don't or won't realize that Satan is behind much of the abomination. I pray for them.

You've finally done it. You've made me embarrassed about the contents of my inbox. It is this kind of perjorative hate-mongering that causes people to find terms like 'follower' or 'believer' to use instead of 'Christian'. Where where your diatribes against intolerant mobs when gay couples were on the receiving end of physical violence, verbal assaults, murder, and discrimination in housing, jobs, and every other aspect of our culture?! I truly hope you are eventually given the wisdom and grace to feel shame over this. To our gay and lesbian brothers and sisters, I apologize on behalf of my bigotted brothers and sisters, and ask your forgiveness. I hope that they know not what they do.

It amazes me the lengths people go to to force their will onto others. The harrassment and destruction upon people that speak up for what is right is unacceptable, and it is ridiculous that people and businesses are getting punished for saying that gay/lesbian relationships are wrong! For everyone that has stood up for God's design for marriage: good for you!!! I too, believe in man-woman marriage, and homosexuality is plain wrong, every single form of it is against God's plan. Men and women were not created to be with the same sex, but with the opposite; that's just the way God intended it, and we have no right to challenge that. Thanks all of you that stand up for what is right, moral, and decent.

Chris and Paula are great examples of the ignorance masquerading as intellect on the LBGT, "progressive", hatemongering left. Jack Rogers book is personal ideology, unsupported by Biblical witness. I suggest you read it again, side by side with Rob Gagnon's seminal work on the Bible and Homosexuality. The difference is astounding. Further, that old canard about Paul simply doesn't hold water. Better you should learn Biblical Greek and do your own exegesis. Stop relying on ideologues for facts.

Why do you use capital letters to characterize Catholics and Mormons and use lower case for evangelicals. It sure makes us look like a class of second hand hanger's on. From An Evangelical Robert Bryant

Brilliant article, Mollie. As a college student, I appreciate when others give me reason to avoid becoming an old, encrusted cynic.

Jesus would have said to the gay guys who wanted to get married "To go and sin no more" He would not have OKed their commitment service in any way. The BIBLE, Word of God is clear that this "Life Style" is a sin. Jesus loved and cared for the least, yes he did and he ministered to them not to commit the sins they were committing. Love the sinner not the sin. ** Marriage, One Man One Woman. **

'Marriage is an honorable estate institutated by God and sanctified by Christ in his presence at a Wedding at Cana of Galilee; it is a Holy and honorable estate; it is not to be entered into unadvisedly but reverently and discreetly. It is into this Holy estate that these two have come....' For me the issue has nothing whatsoever to do with 'hatred of gays' but instead with things 'holy' and 'sacred' - such as 'marriage', the 'scriptures', and the 'ordination of ministry'.

Jim   Posted: March 07, 2009 11:51 AM
My two questions are as follows. What percentage of the practicing homosexual community wants to pursue marriage? What percentage of existing same sex unions are now filing for divorce?

Steve S   Posted: March 06, 2009 10:00 PM
So a tiny minority of people who are upset about the Prop 8 outcome react badly, and this author paints the millions of Americans who support equal marriage as bigots and vandals? The only thing missing from this paranoia-infused screed was an old-time rant against "media elites" ... Oh wait, that's in there, too! Is this how CT seeks to express it's love for neighbor? All in all, not very helpful.

Pete Dymond   Posted: March 06, 2009 9:52 PM
Interesting how few commentators use their names. Anyway, it's an all out assault on Christian, American family values. True to say that the message that God hates homosexuals has been a loud voice of the Church, which is a dangerous message to send. God hates all sin. HOWEVER, unrepentant and blatant attacks on Christian values must be protested. If 'society' wishes to condone homosexuality, that's one thing, but to sue a Christian for believing that sin is sin cannot be tolerated. You cannot force a church to conduct a same sex marriage, or a Christian photographer etc. Am I supposed to 'show the love of Christ' as you seek to destroy my family values? It's one thing to seek tolerance, it's another to force acceptance on the Church by violent subversion.

Paula Ruth   Posted: March 06, 2009 7:27 PM
While these vocal protests may not be the way to achieve results, all of you should read "Jesus, The Bible and Homosexuality" by Jack Rogers. A new edition is out soon. No one would choose the gay lifestyle if they had a choice in the matter -- as I have known many. Jesus never addressed homosexuality. Every time Paul does (per Rogers and SMU's Dr. John C.Holbert), it is in a litany and the precise translation of the word seems to have an economic implication as in "Madoff may have f----- over his investors." We as Christians should not be building hate against anyone.

Chris   Posted: March 06, 2009 2:14 PM
You 'Christians' ain't seen NOTHING yet. Believe THAT!

Martha   Posted: March 06, 2009 2:05 PM
Excellent article - I could not agree more. Actions certainly speak louder than words and the actions of these temper tantrum flailing activitist have shown their true colors regarding tolerance, and those colors are NOT beautiful like a rainbow either!

Brianne   Posted: March 06, 2009 12:36 PM
The same group that promotes intolerance and violence toward descenters are the ones behind the Homosexual Movement. Does anyone know what their agenda is? http://groups.google.co.id/group/soc.culture.europe/browse_thread/th read/21a866dea6e22d86/70d26213bb3693cd?lnk=raot

Funny, but the self-same "mobs" who made racism untenable in America, will do the same for gay rights. It is only a matter of time. So, why not wait? Tell that to African-Americans in the 1950s! The waiting tactic is urged because it is a failure.

Lacas   Posted: March 06, 2009 12:07 PM
Amen Cal! My partner (a Lutheran pastor), my 8 year old son, and I contuniue to pray for the day when our family is recognized in the eyes of the state. In the meantime we know in the eyes of God, our family, and friends our relationship is every bit as valid as any "traditional" marriage. The saddest thing is explaining to our son why so many people who call themselves Christians are so intent on marginalizing us...but he also knows that he is loved by God unconditionally not matter how vile some of his followers speak of us.

shane   Posted: March 06, 2009 11:31 AM
I'm glad to see so many negative reactions to this article - just the headline itself is a sad commentary on how Christians' desire to be "right" on an issue, has utterly blinded them to living and responding in a manner akin to how Christ called us to live in this world. It just grieves me to read pieces like this in a publication that displays Christ's name in its very title.

Well done, gay fellas! 'I hate gays' community President.

Alex Trebek: "Obnoxious mobs that won't tolerate disagreement don't usually win supporters." Myself: "Umm. What is 'Fundamentalist Christianity'?" DINGDINGDING!!! Correct for $1000!

I thank CT for showing through this article the utter hypocrisy of Gay Rights activistis who have violently and callously defamed and intimidated those who took a stand for marriage. First of all marriage is not a Civil Right. It is a sacrement given by God. It is the basis of any stable society or culture. I also wish that the media-even the Christian media would quit calling Prop 8 and Ammendment 2 in California "Gay marriage bans" There is nothing wrong with supporting a Constitutional Amendment saying that marriage in its true form should be between one man and one woman, until that marriage ends. Also as an African-American male I am agrivated and insulted each time I hear someone who has chosen the lifestyle of homosexuality say that they are a minority just like me. First of all being born black , I didnt ask to be a "minority" . I and my ancestors before me have only asked to be recognized as human because we are. If you want to be human, be humane. Not intolerant
