It is, it is! This is communion. That is the altar rail you are behind. The pastor is blessing the wine stein. If you want a drink, go to the church around the corner where the new restaurant has been established.

Great! If it isn't, it should be! Where two or three believers are gathered, there's the church!

We have a very upbeat church, with many life groups but no cliques. We are all supporting one another, and we have every nationality there is, and love and pray for each other. No judgments just support for so many missionary endeavours. I've gone to church every since I got my Cradle Roll Certificate, which makes it over 70 years and I have never before felt so comfortable and loved. You need the new generations to put new life into it, and how are they going to feel welcome if we are only sitting in judgement on them and not loving them and including them with all their new ideas, that I'm sure do not offend God. The joy of the Lord is my strength, put some happiness in the mix.

But they look so much like Luther & Melancthon!

Believe me, it's not just Baptists.

Way to go Kevin. Another classic 'Frank' cartoon.

Personally, I found it kind of amusing and got a chuckle out of it, but I agree with Trinity 100% What's so bad about going out and having a drink even if you're a Christian? Sure you can become an alcoholic if you do if with frequency, but do you really have to be at home all day glued to The Bible or volunteering for some good cause? If Christianity was exactly like that, that we all had to be cookie baking goody two shoes 24/7 then most people wouldn't take a look at it (I know I wouldn't). A lot of people don't convert to Christ because they think that being a Christian is EXACTLY that.

The Church is the corporal body of Christ. Church service should reflect, therefore, Christ - which means that it should be a welcome and open place. Some do not feel welcomed in the slightest in the institutionalized churches that we've set up and so there are other ways to engage them and bring them to the presence of Jesus. Why do we knock it, just because we personally don't feel comfortable in that situation? Just because we feel that it's not 'reverential' enough? Just because not everyone is wearing a dress or tie? Such a meaningless argument...

Funny! :D Yes, a lot of our brothers think church should attract people. Church should be a welcome place for everyone. I am a firm believer that they are absolutely wrong. The church is the members home. It is our base. It is where we return to hear the Word on Sunday. Not to party, to be entertained, to enjoy a club membership. Some churches feel like golf clubs. I am awaiting some to start charging monthly food bill and membership fees, various activity fees, etc. Maybe tack on 18 holes. It is not a club.

That was funny. I laughed out loud.

A Church is just bricks and stone; the TRUE church is the BODY of CHRIST; the people . How you live day to day, how you treat people, the things you say and do, the places you go....you carry the spirit of God with you everywhere. Haven't you read "Do you not know your body is a Temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you've received from God? You are not your own, you were bought with a price. Therefore honor God with your body." 1Cor. 6:19-20 Read the rest, it's an eye opener.

Actually, I thought it was funny.

Just remember we are ALL sinners, whether we are believers of Jesus or not. Some of us run to Jesus. Some of run from Him. The light of world came to man, but men preferred the darkness rather than light because their deeds would be exposed.

I agree with Bob T that a church should be a friendly place to be. When we enter into corporate worship of God, it should be respectful and it should be done in reverence. In my humble opinion, a bar is not such a place. Jesus meets us where we are. When we go to meet Jesus in worship is a different matter.

Jim Lee   Posted: April 01, 2009 4:50 PM
I do not see any evidence that the real Jesus has a "knack for making sinners uncomfortable." Just the opposite is true, which is why they did (and still can) run to Him. It was the religious folks that felt uncomfortable around Him. True righteousness is expressed in compassion and forgiveness and acceptance. Self-righteousness and the phoniness that it produces is the one thing Jesus repudiated most strongly.

Andrea Graham   Posted: April 01, 2009 3:16 PM
If we actually read the whole new testament, and know what the church fathers actually taught on church discipline, the difference between a bar and a church becomes clear. If we read scripture by scripture, the post-modern definition of judging becomes a ludicrous interpretation of Christ's words. After all, all scripture is God breathed, and the Apostles said to excommunicate those who reject their doctrine and refuse to repent. They also said we judge those inside, not without. That's scripture, too. How we respond to unbelievers and how we respond to believers on sin should be vastly different. Likewise how you treat a baby christian and one who should know better--but babies need some discipline, too, spiritual or otherwise. Jesus actually has a knack for making sinners uncomfortable. When we come into his holy presence, even saints feel filthy in comparison. When He offers a sinner His hand, "let me lift you up out of that pit," too often, they hide their eyes from the light.

Bob T   Posted: April 01, 2009 2:13 PM
This is an interesting cartoon because I have long felt that an effective church should have some of the feel of the neighborhood bar/tavern -- people openly accepted, not judged, good camaraderie, a place to feel welcomed. Kind of like "Cheers" or the Toby Keith song with the refrain, "I love this bar...it's my kind of place. Just walking in the front door puts a big smile on my face." Not that the Church should condone sin, but Jesus had a way of welcoming sinners and making them feel comfortable around Him. It was the sanctimonious religious folks who had problems with Him.

Unfortunately, a lot of Baptists think this is the way it is.
