X-Men Origins: Wolverine

As the finale of a trilogy, X-Men: The Last Stand was disappointing. It concluded by removing the natural superpowers of two key characters, killing off two other beloved heroes, and apparently killing, ...

Pretty good movie. Good action, not bad story.

I can't say that I was a fan, I agree with my fellow viewers who thought that the writers left out an awful lot of sweet canon so that Wolverine could scream and attack as many bad guys as possible. With movies like the new Batman films coming out, comic book filmmakers are going to have to step up their game in the plotline/character development department. The only thing close to digging deeper into Logan's character was the whole "I'm all sad and brooding because everyone is dying around me" schtick that is seen in films all the time. This along with continuity errors and the downplaying of awesome comic heroes into side characters have made these X-men films laughable and extremely dissapointing. I say a reboot a 'la "The Incredible Hulk" is in order.

Not Bad. My expectations were low so it was easy for the film to exceed them. I give it 3 stars.

i whole heartedly agree with cindy, cody should stop hunting down christians. Todays steroetype is just amazing, listen: save the whales, the trees, the dolphins, kill the unborn children, and be an atheist. these things make me mad.

Who is this guy Cody? Why is he on a Christian movie site saying "there is no god", and no one calls him on this??? There are plenty of other movie sites he could go to that are not Christian based, why does he have to defame this one? Oh, maybe because there is no tolerance for Christianity and our beliefs in this world? Go talk to Obama about YOUR fairy tale beliefs.

Here's the thing, the X-men films SUCKED. Seriously, all of them sucked. As an avid reader of some of the comics, I can tell you that Bryan and Brett didn't even TRY to get at least SOME similarities between the comics and the movies. That's why Wolverine ROCKED. It actually utilized the more important aspects of the comic, and the only characters that got shafted were ones you didn't care about anyway(Will.I.Am.? please...) All in all, going with the X-men's poster boy was a great choice, and they pulled it off nicely. oh, and DEADPOOL FTW!!!!

I liked the movie. There was lots of action but no bad language (that I remember). Gambit wasn't on long, which was disappointing, but he was important to keep the plot moving so I hope to see him in the next X-movie (if they make one). I did see Stryker's pin. I'm fully aware of his comicbook counterpart in "God Loves, Man Kills", but that religious aspect was never extended to his character in X2 or this movie, so I was annoyed. I'm agnostic, but I hate when writers/directors take petty swipes at religion. Visiting religious issues or having religious characters is fine. But pointing out-- without any relevance or further explanation-- that an evil villain is (in this case) Christian is IMO a jab. If you don't think it meant anything, what if he'd worn a swastika? People would say "Aah...so that's where he's coming from!" Imagine the reaction if he'd worn an Islamic symbol...

I really loved the wolverine movie, i though they did a really good job of making a fun and interesting story, i would have like it better though if weapon XI had played a greater part in the movie, as they killed him off pretty quickly, but the rest was all good.

Cody   Posted: May 10, 2009 4:49 PM
There is no god!!! Open your eyes and stop hating and judging other people based on a fairy tale!! even if it did, it's only you're interpretation of what you're too stupid to understand. that is all :)

I'm extremely disappointed that Russ Breimeier chose to use the words "pimped out" to describe Gambit on page 2 of this revew. What concerns me is that at the heart of our culture's twisted delight in using the word "pimp" is a highly disturbing fascination with/approval of the men who exploit women. Christians should be the first to reject this language. I expect more thoughtfulness from Christianity Today.

Actually, Wolverine in the comics DID suffer from amnesia, I believe. Charles Xavier found him as a man without a past, whose healing factor made it impossible to tell how old he was. The Weapon X commando team stuff came out later.

I liked this movie. In oneof the comments above, the guy said that Stryker was wearing a cross lapel pin in one of the scenes in the movie. When I saw the movie, I looked closely at the pin, and it looked more like a little sword than a cross. Besides that, I thought it was pretty good movie.

I knew going into the movie that wolverine will be fighting with his claws and some story would go along with it. I was more impressed with the story and performances than the action. Hugh Jackman shoulders and intensity were amazing. He also brought better still moments to the screen than the previous films. I could tell Jackman was more into this film. The final action scene was cool to look at and fun to watch even though they added a little too much to Weapon X1 arsenal of powers. Bad things was some bad CGI I mean bad CGI. Alot of characters were thrown at us but most of them supported the origins of wolverine. Some parts in the 2nd half seemed rushed. I wonder if I was not xmen fan would I have liked the story and action better? This was a good movie and if you want more go read the comics stop complaining.

Wolverine's memory loss has always been a key plot point. He did all this cool stuff, including covert ops with Captain America, but he doesn't remember any of it. I thought the movie was fun, but it was, like Spider-Man 3, trying to do too many things. I wish it would have focused more on Wolverine's particular story instead of worrying so much about introducing as many outside characters as possible. Did anyone else see a glimpse of Ororo Monroe (Storm) as a youngster in the trailer? I did not see that in the movie.

A friend of mine summarized the plot of this movie quite well. If you look at the "plots" for fighting games that attempt to tell a shallow story as a function of letting all sorts of random people meet up and then fight each other, that's essentially what you get with this film. There is so much good, "canonized" (from the comics) content that could've been used to tell the story, but it's like someone got up and said "no, let's let someone else take a stab at it." It's like the world's worst fanfic come to life. "Hey, don't I know you?" "Yeah, I think so. Let's fight." That's basically how the plot goes, and most mutants (other than Wolverine) get no more than 3 minutes' screen time, because Wolverine just jumps from one mutant to another for his various battles. What an awful, awful film.

The reviewer has a problem with the plot. The plot is okay and makes sense. And Jesus didn't belong to the military. That's not the point of the movie.

Lou   Posted: May 04, 2009 1:23 AM
For those of us who don't read the comics, we can sit back and enjoy the movies at face value, as intriguing science fiction. I don't care whether the baddie wears a cross or not. In the end it's how we live that shows the non-believer what Christ is like, not what symbols we wear.

Me   Posted: May 03, 2009 7:37 PM
Jack, Not sure if your a big comic book fan, but in the comics Stryker is televangelist who thinks he's on a mission from God to destroy all mutants. I don't know if that makes the cross in the movie more or less anti-Christian.

Ianstein   Posted: May 03, 2009 5:17 PM
I love Wolverine, but the plot of this movie SUCKED! Agreed; the war montage at the beginning was probably the best part of the film. It should have been an R-movie. My 5-year old could easily watch this flick. There is almost no blood, no guts, no misery or pain or emotion. C'mon! This is about a guy who has razor claws, goes into bezerker mode, and slices people apart! I liked Sabertooth but think every other mutant in the film should have been left out! The movie should have been called WOLVERINE, not X-Men: Origins=Wolverine. It's basically X-Men 0.

Caleb   Posted: May 03, 2009 1:24 AM
Okay, Jack (above), you're clearly reading into this. I didn't see the cross, and I doubt many other people did. He's a bad guy, and bad guys sometimes like to justify themselves by pretending that they have a 'higher calling'. Which, especially in Stryker's position, is a load of baloney. He's killing people in strange and twisted ways. That's all. But I thought hte movie was really good. Agreed, not too fleshed out, but still good fun.

I enjoyed the movie. There was def. a departure from the comics time line but to condense years of comic story lines into a couple of hours they did well. Does leave some questions about the future of the franchise and what direction they are going to take it but over all it is what they set out for it to be a live action comic book that is aimed at the teen demographic. As far as Jack comment about it being anti-christian. If he knew any background on the characters from the comic series he would know that Striker was originally a christian preacher that was bent on destroying the mutants out of fear and misunderstanding. He was written merely as an example of how some big media Christians are just as hateful and full of bigotry, obviously not an attack on all of Christianity.

Vance   Posted: May 02, 2009 7:32 PM
I have to agree with the basic conclusion of this review. Gambit and Deadpool are completely wasted as characters, it doesn't fit with the chronology of the comic series or fit in too well with the continuity of the film franchise, and tends to raise more questions than it answers. I enjoyed the film, especially the themes of internal struggle and the ultimate futility of revenge, but it had so much wasted potential.

kim   Posted: May 02, 2009 10:04 AM
Enjoyed the movie. I liked the fact that wolverine struggled with hes way of life and changed and displayed heroism and compassion. It was a good prequel to the three x-men movies. Looking forward to more.

Jack   Posted: May 01, 2009 11:02 PM
This movie has a very anti-Christian, anti-military undertone. There is a scene where wolverine wakes up in the hospital and threatens the "bad guy" Striker. There is a subtle (or not so subtle) anti-Christian message in the scene as Striker is clearly wearing a Christian cross on his suit coat. Why? Every scene in movies are so well-thought out (including wardrobes) it is impossible to be a mistake. So, if it was placed there on purpose, on the villlian, what message are they trying to convey about Christians? People may think I'm reading too much into a simple lapel pin, but I think it's time Christians become a lot more discerning and speak out more about such anti-Christian agendas in the media.
