Year One

It had to happen eventually. It has been five years since The Passion of the Christ brought the Bible epic back to the big screen, and nearly four since Judd Apatow began producing and directing a string ...

I have never commented on a movie before but this was so bad that I wanted to warn everyone not to watch it. It not only was blasphemous, rude and crude it was poorly done. We were very dissapointed and surprised it only had a PG-13 rating as well.

This movie was terrible. Not only was it not funny, it mocked the Bible and Genesis account of man's fall. I'm never one to take myself too seriously but I don't cross certain lines and I fell this movie crossed those lines.

Hollywood never gets tired of mocking believers. But please, keep on supporting the beast, Christians. Because, you know, if you stopped viewing films like "Year One", maybe, just maybe, Hollywood wouldn't make films like this one.

I actually loved the movie - found it way more funny than all the reviews are making it. It made me so surprised when I actually saw it, how good it was.

Movie was funny in parts, but overall very disappointing. Whilst some of the references to the Bible were clever and witty and put a funny spin on some of the weird and wacky things in the OT, such as the names, such as the traditions, most were simply crude for the sake of being crude, irreverant and, frankly, disgusting. I would stay away from it if you can.

I found this movie to be incredibly stupid, but nonetheless entertaining. It was lighthearted and funny. You can't deny that Oh peeing on his own face wasn't funny. There is nothing to be truly offended by from this film. Just because it takes a humorous stance on bible stories doesn't mean that its offensive. You have the sensibilities of a child.

I thought from the previews that it was a show about hunters/gatherers. It mostly just mocked religion and faith in general. It wasen't even funny - Just kind of boring and offensive. I fell asleep half-way through. Save your money.

Movie was hilarious. Pay no mind to all the zealots who are offended by the movie.

I found this movie very funny, and loved message it sent. Not a message of anti-God, and in fact doesn't mock God at all. It makes commentary on how dangerous blind faith can be and how one should always question authority, but foremost, is a comedy more than anything. It also does a good job of showing how people thought back in the day as well. overall, it may have had some crude humor, but it was funny crude humor, and overall was a very funny movie. I don't think one should miss this just because of their religion, because it doesn't really do anything to hurt your faith, and you shouldn't miss a good, funny, movie.

Whatever you think of its treatment of the Bible, the movie just wasn't funny. I barely cracked a smile the entire time. I may have chuckled if I was a junior high boy.

I wasn't going to see this movie anyway, but I am glad to know what it is actually about. I wouldn't dare see a movie that blatantly mocks God. They aren't mocking men and women of faith. They are mocking God and trying to humiliate the faith out of those who believe. No thanks! That happens far to frequently in Hollywood these days. I'm not saying if you saw it and laughed here and there you're somehow bad. I am sure some things were funny and we should be able to laugh at ourselves, but blasphemy is blasphemy. This sounds like blasphemy. Christians should know better and turn away.

When I saw the commercials for this movie, i thought it was going to be about cavemen. I too love Jack Black so I saw it! The first SCENE was about cavemen, and the rest was about God, and the biblical stories. Some of the jokes were funny, not gonna lie, but I thought it was insulting how they made the Bible look.

JP   Posted: June 21, 2009 11:40 PM
I didn't expect much, but it was still disappointing. Very few of the jokes were funny, and Black did his usual over the top schtick. It could almost be bearable if my beliefs weren't also insulted. I tried to ignore the jabs at Judeo Christian beliefs and just take it for a comedy, but it was too much. I wish I hadn't gone.

Thanks to Mr. Chattaway's review and Deryk's comments, I now know that I will definitely avoid even borrowing this movie free from the library. I'm grateful for these reviews because I, too, want to honor God in what I choose to see and hear. I'm encouraging everyone I know to stay far, far away from this obvious travesty of a film. Thank you all.

I appreciate the review- I'm a Jack Black fan, and would have ventured out to see this one. But I think I will pass now. Thanks.

laura   Posted: June 20, 2009 6:01 PM
Thanks especially to deryk. i was planning to see this with friends, but your comment about it not being for anyone who wants to honor God made me reconsider. it's gonna be kinda hard to tell my friends i'm not going to go... anyway, thanks for your words of wisdom. :)

I skipped this, but not because I was worried about how a major studio's vision of the book of Genesis might affect my faith. I saw that it starred Jack Black and then I saw the trailer, and I was certain that when my life comes to an end, there would have been sooooo many things I would rather have done with the 97 minutes it would have taken to endure it. Please enable "zero" as an option on the star rating. It's hard to say that a rating of "one" out of the four possible is artificially inflated, but I have no doubt that in this case, that will be true.

I didn't see it, but I'm interested in the reviews because our senior high Sunday School group watches a lot of movies and tries to draw biblical themes from them. Good to know we can stay away from this one, thanks.

as an 18- year old and someone who tries to live out his faith in everyday life, i was ridiculously disappointed with this film. i didn't actually make it through the whole thing, i left before i was subject to any more crude, vulgar sexual humor. i spent half the movie ducking my eyes, trying to ignore things being said - this movie is not for anyone who wants to honor God with what they watch. it's crap. spend your time and money in a better way. and i'm not just saying that - this review is even somewhat conservative in the amount of disgusting words and actions that are all in the name of "humor." if this is what it takes to amuse moviegoers today, take my word for it and pass.

Dan   Posted: June 19, 2009 8:28 PM
Because laziness isn't a virtue. Christians are often too quick to judge something by face value and write it off without putting to work the brain God gave them. I appreciate it when someone can back up what they say and Peter Chattaway did just that.

why waste precious time reviewing such garbage? How about just telling readers "We'll pass on this one. It's just too bad to review."
