Public Enemies

Ever since Francis Ford Coppola abdicated the rights in 1974 after The Godfather II, no one has mastered the crime epic better than Michael Mann. Mann's Heat (1995) is, in my opinion, flawless. It's inevitable ...

I usually love Johnny Depp movies, but this one was soooooo slooooow and boring....what about a plot...the story of Dillinger could have been so strong and how about the love angle...barely there. I was extremely disappointed and would give it a zero star...Don't waste your money or time

I love Johnny Depp and I love a good gangster movie...so why did I yawn through the first hour of this movie. There is absolutely 0 character developement...I find myself not caring one way or the other about John Dillinger, his girlfriend or the gman Purvis. Love the actors...but this movie was a disappointment...for me. :) I'd give it two stars...can't seem to change it on the screen. Rent it!

I headed out to the theater by myself and really enjoyed this supposed Gangster Flick. It was filmed beautifully and the story was strong. I think it may dazzle and question some of our motives, like Mr. Purvis. Seems he is more consumed with catching Dillinger than Dillinger is on breaking the law. It was a nice break from the usual nudity and other junk packed into movies. It was a slice of history and well written. Thumbs up here.

The reviewer says Dick Cheney said "America must embrace cruelty in order to survive in a cruel world".. Huh...where did he say that? It is always nice to see this new generation of liberals make stuff up. What a jerk. And it is clear the the editorial board of CT is just as bad.

Please ignore the 1-star rating, I can't seem to alter it. "...his is a deeply phallocentric world dominated by hypermasculine superstars"? What's that supposed to mean as a criticism? And what's wrong with daring make a picture that doesn't feature women? You don't hear anyone blasting John Sturgess (The Magnificent Seven, The Great Escape) like that, and I don't remember anyone believing Lawrence of Arabia is flawed due to its all-male cast. I've been hearing that sort of criticism a lot since The Lord of the Rings became a film and people realized that the cast is mostly male, and decided that this was somehow sexist. I don't understand why such films are problematic. (P.S. I'm a dame. And on a side note, I don't remember hearing people go after Sofia Coppola for her "hyperfeminine" pictures.)

I was a little disappointed in it. I felt like Mann didn't blur the line between right and wrong as much as cross over it. Depp's Dillinger is painted as the heroic victim, while Bale's Purvis is a cardboard thin character who is made to be the villain. Certainly, while neither person can be said to be 100% right or wrong, I felt that Mann's portrayal was too lopsided. And what's with Bale's lack of screen time? Purvis has absolutely no depth. He makes inconsistent decisions and we are given no idea for what really drives him.
