Cuba for Christ—Ahora!
The Communist island's improbable revival is 15 years old and growing stronger.

Take a Friday night walk through Havana's Parque G to see up close how much Cuba needs Christ. By day, the downtown park offers a pleasant stroll along a wide, tree-lined boulevard down to the gulf coastline. ...

Thank you for sharing the "Good News" of the young people of Cuba. They will be wonderful witnesses for Jesus. I had the privilege to visit Cuba a couple of times recently and will never forget the wonderful people we met at Varadera Presbyterian Church. Viva Cuba!

This article is really wonderful. I grew up in Cuba and experienced firsthand the oppression for being a Christian. Some Sundays schools had a mandatory "military training" for kids. I remember that the teacher stood me in front of the whole class and made fun of me becuase I chose to go to church instead of going to military training. I went to the next school training where they would teach us to use bb guns to denfend againt the US (in elementary school). My pastor was put in jail and abused. The goverment had treat it the people and christians badly, but God has always being faithful. The early church was also persecuted, people made fun of them, but God's Word continued to spread. Let's spread the Word!!!

Just want Castro wants- a thousands of fragmented cults filled with people too busy speaking in tongues to worry about earthly matters like Communism and freedom. It's amazing how arrogant and ignorant people become when they convert to the American religion: how can someone speak with a straight face about how the Gospel was only brought to Cuba in the 19th century? You people are testing God badly, I can tell.

Let us pray that capitalism ends soon too. If you think socialism is bad in Cuba, go see what capitalism looks like in Honduras or Haiti. Yes I have been to Cuba and know that it is not a paradise. There is only one paradise, but that does not excuse those who profit off the misery of people, whether it be oligarchy or managed care. But I love the people of Cuba and the people of Honduras and Haiti. May the Lord God Almighty bless them with revival whether in duress or comfort. ¡Que Dios les bendiga!

Having just been to Cuba (have you Dan? or just sarcasm run amok) I can tell you the Christian community in Cuba is genuine, real and committed to reaching their country for Christ. The joy in their eyes and the love in their hearts will melt the harshest sceptic. I brought in new Bibles for families...unbelievable their reaction--almost afraid to open these new beautifully bound books. One family had owned and read their family Bible so long and so much that every pages had become loose leaf. The typical Cuban pastor forfeits any government subsidies. Most Cubans cannot live without these "perks" from the Socialist government. Typical monthly income for a Cuban family is around $30 USD per month. The "underground economy" is vast and widespread and necessary for survival. The creative work by the Cuban pastors and their families is really amazing....but they do not complain. They are grateful for the "liberation" of the Gospel. Truth with content vs.50 years of lies. Amen

I am a believer in Yeshua and I love my Christian brothers and sisters all over the world. Cuba as a socialist country has been trying to survive after the Soviet Union collapse. I do not love capitalism and its "democracy" more than I love socialism, but one thing is for sure, the Spirit Of the Eternal is the one who is bringing changes to Cuba, Israel, North Korea, China and all those countries where being a Christian has been an affront to the status quo of those nations. In Israel more and more people are looking at Yeshua (Jesus) as the only one who can be the Messiah or Christ, and despite the rabbinic religious establishment, believers in Yeshua are multiplying and it is so good to see former muslim and rabbinic believers get together under Yeshua's love. Freedom is in our hearts and has nothing to do with materialism. We are here in this world for some decades and then we part to be with our Mar Yeshua who is coming soon to rule this world. Amen

Thanks for this beautiful article! I'm grateful to our wonderful Lord for how He is helping our faithful brothers and sisters in Cuba. May He also pour out His Spirit on us in the States and help us to humble ourselves before Him, repent of our arrogance, and be filled with joy in His presence and zeal to help others rejoice in Him!

It looks like more Cuba for the USA than Cuba for Christ. In a country where the Republican Right (and most evangelicals) claim for a State-Religion alliance, Cuba could be the next megachurch(terachurch?) of Capitalism with McDonalds, Casinos, and guns for everyone. Thanks to freedom without any content...

Amazing. God's Spirit and his people acting on that Spirit.

What a wonderful article! I am the daughter of Cuban immigrants and go to a church where the majority are also immigrants. I have heard from them the drastic growth of the church there in the last years. I know of pastors who decades before were jailed for being Chrisitans. To Darren who posted a comment about Cuba meeting the basic needs of the people- this is the picture that the government paints to the outside but the daily reality in which the Cuban ppl live is very different. They lack food, medications, and all other "basic" needs. Let us pray that communism comes to an end soon!

Or maybe the Church in the US could start demonstrating Jesus and his Kingdom, not allying itself with, prostituting itself, to the forces of greed and injustice, the Republican Right. Can't you sisters and brothers smell how mean they are? Hard times are coming; that's always good for the Church.

This is a totally awesome article depicting an even more totally awesome miracle of the Holy Spirit. What do we need for a revival in the United States???--much prayer, and maybe our freedoms taken away for 10 years, with a good amount of persecution thrown in to weed out the fair-weather Christians---hmm, sounds like a scary formula, but that was what the Cuban believers went through, and God has rewarded their faith. Also the lean years of persecution weeded out the bench-warming "fair-weather" Christians, who I wouldn't call Christians at all. With a solid core of faithful and strong believers, they were ready. That is the other part of this formula that worked for them. But the Jesus through the Holy Spirit was involved totally from beginning to where they are now. Oh, btw, I have those sermon transcripts of the Beatitudes put on UNITYINCHRIST.COM now, in the Matthew section.

God is going to send a great revival in Cuba. We are living at the end times, and the day of revival around the world is going to take place soon. As God is doing in China and India, God is going to do the same in Cuba. Whenever I visit India, my homeland, I feel the hunger in their heart. There is a spiritual hunger everywhere in the world, and only Christ who can give the living water and abundant life. I am praying and looking for a day to visit Cuba and to work with some local Churches, to reachout the people there. Our wealth, stocks, bonds, etc will be gone for ever, but what we do for the Kingdom of God is an eternal investment.

"Many evangelicals said their greatest desire is not for more political and economic freedom, but for active faith" This is awesome and challenging and so encouraging to hear. That should be the whole church's cry, for more of God.

What a wonderful article! I wept a few times as I read of the faith & courage of the Cuban people! My parents were cuban refugees to the U.S. in 1960. I have family that live in Cuba and I have visited with them and heard their stories of plight and sorrow. It does my heart so much good to see what our precious Lord is doing in Cuba and how the Holy Spirit is moving upon the people. Each day I pray for Cuba and the people. That Christ will be accepted by all who live on that beautiful island. One day, hopefully soon, I hope to travel to Cuba myself and visit the island that my parents left and continue to love and pray for. May God bless those Cuban pastors, and evangelists and converts. May He grow them in His word and may Cuba trully bring forth much fruit for the glory of God! In Christ, gloria ps. To darren: Your comments are concering. Have you visited cuba? Have you seen their plight first hand. They lack basic needs. Your comments reveal your lack of knowledge.

What a wonderful article! I love Cuba and its people. I grew up in a Cuban community and had the pleasure of going on a missions trip there. I will be marrying into a Cuban family and they are such wonderful people. They have been through so much hardship because of Communism, yet their spirit is resilient! I assure you that their basic human needs have not been met nor are they being met today. I was in a hospital in Havana while on missions trip and they didn't even have soap in their bathrooms; and I'm not going to describe the condition of the place itself. People in Cuba are hungry and in much need of physical needs, but the Church there is filled with the Holy Spirit.

What a wonderful story! I hope to visit Cuba one day and see for myself the realities there. It is so great to hear the Church growing in spite of such difficulties. The courage these fellow christians have demonstrated day after day for a very long time, is worthy of all praise. They will be rewarded in heaven greatly. I don't knick pick, but the young man in the photo head of the article needs to be taught, to take off his hat when praying; this matter is addresed by Paul in 1st Co. 11:3-13.

Daren   Posted: July 09, 2009 11:36 AM
Christ was a communist. He would have never denied another human being shelter, medical care, education, love. Re-invent this article and title it the USA and like minded 1st world nations need Christ. The connection between first would wealth/exploitation and 3rd world poverty is apparent. At least Cuba meets the basic human needs of their population. Given their size and population, it is remarkable that they meet or exceed quality of life standards in comparison to the USA. Tiny little Cuba exports doctors all over Latin America, tiny little Cuba fought for the human rigghts of South Africans during aparthied. The USA did nothing more than try to thwart Cuba's efforts to liberate Africans. Look at your own house before you cast a stone.
