Talk About It
Discussion starters
  1. If you have children, or have siblings or friends with children, how concerned are you about the possibility of abduction? How often do you think about it? How worried do you think parents today are compared to the worries of their parents? How about kids today compared to kids of previous generations?
  2. What if anything has changed? Has the world changed very much? Have perceptions changed very much? Which has changed more? Does the media play any role?
  3. Consider what Veronica does immediately after telling Manuelo "You pay for this—I make sure." Is this an understandable choice? Is it a morally justified choice? Are there any mitigating factors that weigh in her favor and make this more reasonable or understandable? Any aggravating factors that weigh against her and make it less excusable or more serious? Could you see yourself making such a choice? If so, do you think this would be the right choice? What choice would you hope to make?
  4. What do you think is the message of the final scene with Jorge back in Mexico City? How if at all does this relate to the themes of the film as a whole? Do you agree with this message? Why or why not?
The Family Corner
For parents to consider

Trade is rated R for disturbing sexual material involving minors, violence including a rape, language and some drug content. The rape scene is graphic though not explicit. A minor is subjected to offscreen sexual abuse, and there is a disturbing, bloody scene depicting an offscreen act of self-mutilation (with mitigating circumstances). Language includes much obscenity and some taking of God's name in vain.
