New in Town

Talk About It
Discussion starters
  1. Lucy is accused of lying by not divulging the plans to downsize. Do you agree that this omission was a kind of lie? Why or why not?
  2. Blanche says the residents of New Ulm are in the habit of talking about Jesus in casual conversation? Are you in this habit? Why or why not?
  3. Have you ever been new in town? What was the experience like? Who helped you make the transition? How can we help others who are new—to our workplace, our neighborhood, our church, etc.
  4. Have you or someone you know faced the possibility of losing your job lately? How have you coped with that stress?
The Family Corner
For parents to consider

New in Town is rated PG for mild language. Lucy and Ted flirt and make out on the couch, but nothing escalates to the bedroom. There is mild language along the lines of "gulldarnit" throughout the movie. (Note: The film had originally been rated PG-13, but Lionsgate cut most of the offensive language to get a PG rating because they wanted a more family-friendly movie. Kudos to Lionsgate.)

I just watched this movie in our church auditorium and I had to ask myself what would Jesus think. We are so lucky His Name was mentioned three times. Yes, it is nice that that happened BUT Gods' Name was used in vain. Is it okay to have sex without marriage at least implied.? What about the nipple incident?? There is sexual addiction abounding in our country and in our churches (although carefully hidden). I just don't get it. Are we in the world or of the world?? Drinking to excess??? Okay, too I guess. SORRY The only thing I am glad about is she saved the plant and lived happily ever after. Right???

I loved this movie. I live in Minnesota and can relate to everything in the movie. I laughed so much watching this film. I loved Jesus being mentioned and the transformation that took place in Renee Zellweger's character. Becoming more concerned for others that ourselves is exactly what Jesus wants.
