Bill Mallonee
Cabin Songs (indie)

Style: Honest contemplative folk; compare to Bob Dylan, Bruce Cockburn

Top tracks: "Name Its Name," "Did I Tell You the Bullet's Still There"

Shunning the industry standard of making a "full" album every year or two, veteran troubadour Bill Mallonee has recently been releasing a new EP about every three months through his website. This 7-song pearl was written and recorded in 10 days in a North Carolina mountain cabin last fall. Thematically, Mallonee is wrestling with the deaths of his father and a longtime friend, so "a certain sadness," as he puts it, pervades the songs. But, he adds appropriately, "there's a hallowed light scattered about." The album includes his signature voice, clever lyricism, and wit.

I listened to "did I tell you the bullet's still there" on his Myspace page. The song is one of the best written songs I've ever heard. Amazing!

If it says Vigilantes of Love or Bill Mallonee, buy it. It will be great.

If you are craving honest, beautifully "well-worn" music that is about as far from corporate as you can get, you need to buy this album - about $6 from the website - and give it a spin. Bill Mallonee is every bit as rewarding as Dylan.
