Alejandro Escovedo's Street Songs of Love is exactly what it says it is—a collection of tough, streetwise rock 'n' roll songs about love romantic and paternal, love that holds steady and love that falls apart. The always-autobiographical singer/songwriter sings a tender, fatherly song to his son on "Down in the Bowery," a duet with Ian Hunter, while he trades gruff vocal lines with Bruce Springsteen on "Faith," a dynamite rocker about a love that's rooted in "the mystery above." The rough, streamlined tracks pack a mighty thump, and Escovedo turns lyrics like "I'm in love with love" into rock poetry.
