Helene Madjiangue reads from the Psalms while leading an impromptu Bible service on a Sunday morning. Madjiangue regularly reads Scripture and sings hymns in Tuperie, one of Chad's local languages, with small groups of women and children.
Birch said she asked Madjiangue what she was praying for: "She said that they were praying for God's protection, and they were actually celebrating the fact that God had protected them up until this point. It was quite a wonderful thing to see amongst all of that chaos that people had brought their Bibles."
"There is a lot of wind here, there is no food, and there are too many people," Madjiangue told Birch. The 41-year-old woman said that she and her six children, who walked to Kosseri, have been there for more than a week. Madjiangue told World Vision aid workers that she is not sure when she will feel safe enough to return to Chad.
