By Ann Birch

"As long as we can stand the suffering here under these trees, we will stay here," Yvonne Tinodji said. "We pray that the Lord has mercy on our country and brings peace to it so that we can live as other nations," she adds. "We are tired of these unnecessary killings."

Birch said there are two major responses to the end of the immediate crisis in N'Djemena: "When we would speak to people and say, 'Are you going to return home?' the majority of the answers were 'No, we're not. We're not going to go back until there's peace.' And then some people would say, 'Yes, we are going to go back and we're going to go back tomorrow.' But when we would go back the next day, the same faces would still be there. Clearly it's not good for people to be in these camps. And agencies like World Vision can try to take care of children and their families, but the place for a child is back in their home — their permanent home, not a refugee camp."
