Adam and Eve, 1504, Engraving
From Genesis 3
Satan, in the form of the serpent, is the central figure among Adam, Eve, and a collection of peaceable animals. On his head is what looks like a peacock crest. Heller says such a depiction of Satan is rare, but that there may be a symbolic reason for it.
"In Christian art, starting with the early Middle Ages, there's a link between the peacock and the sacrifice and the resurrection of Christ. If we read it that way, the implication may be that the original sin was part and parcel of the whole divine plan for the ultimate redemption through the sacrifice of Christ." Readers who knew the Bible could see in the engravings clues the artist inserted about the arc of the gospel.
