The bright reds and golds of this Russian icon charge the scene with richness and extravagance. Gold suggests royalty and divinity, which Christ revealed himself to have at the Last Supper ("I and the Father are one"). Red, specifically the long drape encircling Jesus' form, foreshadows the events in the next days in Jesus' life — and the extravagant, costly sacrifice those events would bring.
