Lucas Cranach the Elder, The Last Supper, in Stadtkirche (City Church), Wittenberg, Germany, 1547
|
Lucas Cranach the Elder, nicknamed "Martin Luther's PR man" by one British journalist, painted this depiction of the Last Supper for a small (and at the time, new) Protestant church in Torgau, Germany. Known as the "Reformation altarpiece," The Last Supper reveals just how much Cranach was caught up in the buzz of Reformation politics: The figure on the right receiving a cup of wine is Martin Luther, a close friend of Cranach's. Lesser-known Reformers are also included around the table.
