Tilman Riemenschneider, Heilig-Blut Altar in St. Jakobus Church, Rothenburg, Germany, 1501–05

"What you are about to do, do quickly," (John 13:37) Jesus tells Judas, who, in this wood carving from Renaissance artist Tilman Riemenschneider, stands in the center, looking up to Jesus with an ambivalent expression. (Note the money bag he carries is his left hand.) Judas's demeanor, a stark contrast to Jesus' knowing gaze, highlights the tension of the moment, as Judas is overcome by evil and goes into the night to betray the Lord to the chief priests and Pharisees.
