Russian artist Nikolai Ge shows the disciples resting with Jesus after their shared meal. It is a battle of light and darkness: Judas's face is barely visible; he has turned from the light, and his deeds are obscured in darkness. The disciples seem puzzled. But knowing what must happen, Jesus's face hangs with sadness not surprise at his friend's betrayal. "This very night you will all fall away on account of me" (Matt. 26:31).
