In He Qi's book
Look Toward the Heavens, this painting illustrates the Passover. On his website, it refers to Gideon's encounter with God by an oak tree when he was "threshing wheat in a winepress to keep it from the Midianites." Alone, with the Chinese buildings and a cobblestone path stretching out behind him, Gideon offers a pot of broth to the person who just commanded him to save Israel. The moment pictured is the instant before God consumes in fire the meal Gideon prepared as if for an ordinary guest, the moment before Gideon realizes he has been speaking with God Almighty.
