Annunciation to the Shepherds is one page in an illuminated manuscript by the Limburg Brothers, three Dutch illuminators working at the end of the 14th century. Illuminated manuscripts were widespread during the Gothic Middle Ages, though the earliest have been traced back to A.D. 400-600. Annunciation to the Shepherds is from Les Belles Heures du Duc de Berry, a Book of Hours made especially for a (very wealthy) patron for personal use.
An illuminated manuscript's text and borders were just as ornate, if not more, than accompanying images. Hence, this page's beauty lays not so much in the depiction of the shepherds and angels, but in the decorative floral design surrounding the image.
